Sugeiry Monsac (Villa Maria, Dom. Rep. / Arizona Western J.C.) tallied 19-of-23 points in the second half, as the
Robert Morris University women's basketball team fell to, 2-2 on the season, after losing to Coppin State, 76-68.
In a half that saw only 60 points scored combined, Coppin State opened the game by scoring 16 of the first 21 points jumping to an 11 point lead. After a Rashida Suber three-pointer, Monsac sparked a 14-0 run that ended with a Psyche Butler (Fort Worth, Texas / New Mexico J.C.) lay-up an RMU two point lead.
Coppin State would only score two more baskets in the first half, a Suber three-pointer and a Whitney Cunningham lay-up allowing the Eagles to take a 24-21 lead with 4:05 remaining in the half. The Colonials would go onto score the final five points by way of two Markesha Smith (Clemson, S.C. / Oak Hill Academy) free throws, a Princess Asia Alston (Lowell, Mass. / Butler C.C.) free throw and a Chinata Nesbit (Washington, D.C. / Chipola J.C.) lay-up at the buzzer giving RMU a 26-24 lead at the half.
RMU came out of the gates slow in the second half, allowing Coppin State to take the lead for good and outscore them 14-2 over the first 4:20 of the first half. The Colonials only basket came when Monsac made a lay-up with 17:37 left in the game. The Eagles would extend their lead to 11 following two Monsac free throws, with a Suber three pointer making the score 41-30.
Butler and Monsac each got three points the old fashion way cutting the lead to five at 43-38, but a Tanezia Harden and Tamieka Noel lay-up put the Eagles back on top by 11. The Eagle led would expand as high as 16 after two Suber free throws, capping off a 6-1 run. RMU would make a small charge at the end of the game, getting as close as seven with 5:02 left with a Alston lay-up, but could not stay close as Coppin State stretched the lead back to 15 with 2:05 left in the game. The Colonials maked the score 74-68 with a Monsac three- pointer with only 11 seconds left in the game, but Shalamar Oakley hit two free throws giving Coppin State a 76-68 victory.
For the Colonials, Monsac finished with 23 points, six rebounds, and four steals, while shooting 7-15 from the field and 7-7 from the free throw line. Butler tallied 16 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals, while shooting 5-9 from the field and 6-7 from the free throw line.
Suber led Coppin State with 25 points, while Oakley finished with 21 points. Noel tallied a game high 10 rebounds.
Notes: RMU shot 41.4% from the field including 36.4% from beyond the arc and 69.6% from the free throw line. Coppin State shot an impressive 60.4% from the field including 70.0% from beyond the arc and 64.7% from the free throw line. The Colonials held the advantage in rebounds, 43-33, and had fewer turnovers, 16-22, than the Eagles. Coppin State hit 7-10 three pointers compared to the Colonials only making 4-11 three pointers.
The Colonials return to action when they host Duquesne University at the Charles L. Sewall Center. Tip-off is at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 28, 2006.
