Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University volleyball team finished off the Omni William Penn Invitational by defeating Indiana State 3-0 (32-30, 33-31, 30-22) Sunday morning and Saint Francis (Pa.) 3-0 (30-25, 30-28, 30-20) Sunday evning. Junior middle blocker / outside hitter Emily Wolthuis (Byron Center, Mich. / South Christian) was named to the All-Tournament team.
Match one of the day saw two Colonials go over the double-digit kill mark, with three others surpasing five. Wolthuis recorded a match high 16 kills, while also tallying seven digs, two service aces and two block assists. Junior Jenn Stambaugh (Union Bridge, Md. / Francis Scott Key) finished with 14 kills, six digs and two block assists. Senior middle blocker Janette Schneider (Leetsdale, Pa. / Quaker Valley) tallied seven kills, while also finishing with two digs and four total blocks. Sophomore Cassie Lee (Vista, Calif. / Vista) also tallied seven kills, while junior Haley Schroeder (Kenmore, N.Y. / Hopewell) recorded six kills and three total blocks.
Junior setter Tawnya Storino (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Baldwin) led the Coolonials with 45 assists and three service aces, while also tallying five digs. Sophomore defensive specialist Alaina Gibson (Munice, Ind. / Munice Burris) finished with 12 digs.
The Colonials displayed alot of offense in the second match with two more Colonials finishing with double-digit kills. Wolthuis tallied her second double-double of the weekend by recording 18 digs and a match high 17 kills. Schneider finished with 10 kills, three total blocks and two service aces.
Gibson once again led the way for the Colonials with 21 digs while also recording two service aces. Storino finished the match with a team high 30 assists, one service ace and nine digs.
Robert Morris, under the guidance of fourth-year head coach Rob Thomas, returns to action when it travels to the Gardner-Webb Tournament. The Colonials are slated to play against UNC-Greensboro Friday, Sept. 8, at 4:30 p.m. RMU is also scheduled to play Gardner-Webb at 10 a.m. and N.C. Central at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9.
