Box Score Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University women's ice hockey team fell to Wayne State University 5-2 in a College Hockey America match-up at the RMU Island Sports Center Friday night.
Wayne State held the advantage through the first 40 minutes of hockey, converting on three out of four power-play opportunities as well as adding a short-handed goal on a 4-0 run.
The Colonials (9-14-2, 1-4-0) were held scoreless until the third period when Sophomores Morgan Beikirch (Livonia, N.Y. / Syracuse Stars) and Kristen Miles (London, Ont. / London Devillettes) scored back-to-back goals. Beikirch extended her point-streak to six games as she scored the Colonials first goal of the night coming off a top-shelf breakaway score at 4:28 into the third. Miles brought the Colonials within two when she took a pass from Freshman Chelsea Walkland (Pittsford, N.Y. / Rochester Edge) on the doorstep with 4:30 remaining in the game.
Miles led the team with two-points on the night, scoring the goal and adding an assist.
The last-gasp effort came to a close when Wayne State scored on an empty-net to seal the game at 5-2.
Sophomore Brianne McLaughlin (Sheffield Village, Oh. / Ohio Flames) made 23 saves in goal for the Colonials.
Melissa Boal led the Warriors in scoring for the night, tallying her second hat-trick of the year while adding an assist to cap off the four point contest.
Wayne State out-shot Robert Morris in the game 28-21, while going 3-6 on the power-play. RMU was 0-9 on the extra-man advantage.
Both teams will meet up again in game-two of the series Saturday night at the RMU Island Sports Center; game time is slated for a 7:35 p.m. start.
