Box Score Pittsburgh, Pa. - Despite a last effort comeback, the Robert Morris University women's ice hockey team fell to Niagara University in a CHA contest, 4-2, at the RMU Island Sports Center Friday evening.
Sophomore Brianne McLaughlin (Sheffield Village, Oh. / Ohio Flames) made 26 saves in goal for Robert Morris (11-18-2, 1-8 CHA).
Both teams were held scoreless until halfway through the second period. The Purple Eagles went to the offense first, taking their first lead of the night off a Jacqueline Spring tally.
The Colonials would answer back as the second period wound down. Sophomore Ali Proodian (Canton, Mich. / Honeybaked U-19) scored her second goal of the year. Proodian knocked in a rebound off a blocked shot in front of the net to tie the game up at 1-1 at the 2:39 mark.
Niagara didn't waste much time as the game progressed into the third. Mary McKinnon put the visiting team back in front with a rocket shot right past the glove side of the Colonial goaltender, 2:47 into the period.
Robert Morris fought back though, despite being out-shot 14-6 in the third period, and 30-19 in the game.
Staring down the 2-1 deficit with less than ten minutes to play, Freshman Jacki Gibson (Burlington, Ont. / Burlington Barracudas) tied the game up with her first collegiate goal. The rookie defenseman took a pass from classmate Jessica Riley (Hamilton, Ont. / Stoney Creek Sabres), lobbing it over the shoulder of Niagara netminder Allison Rutledge for the score.
Rutledge finished the night in goal making 17 saves en route to her ninth win of the season.
The goal proved to be not enough as Niagara's Melanie Mills put the team on her shoulders and scored the games final two goals in the final 1:14 of the game. Her second goal of the game came on an empty net opportunity with 39 seconds as McLaughlin was pulled from goal in attempt to tie the game up and force an overtime session.
Both teams were shut-out on the extra-man opportunity; Niagara was 0-3 while Robert Morris was 0-6.
The Colonial wrap up the two-game series against Niagara tomorrow afternoon. Game time is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start at the RMU Island Sports Center.
