Women's Ice Hockey Falls to Wayne State, 5-3

Box Score Detroit, Mich. - The Robert Morris University women's ice hockey team dropped their fifth straight game this afternoon, falling to CHA opponent Wayne State, 5-3, at the Michigan Coliseum in Detroit, Mich.

Three different Colonials (11-20-2, 1-10-0 CHA) added scores in the loss including Freshman Jessica Riley (Hamilton, Ont. / Stoney Creek Sabres), Freshman Chelsea Walkland (Pittsford, N.Y. / Rochester Edge) and Sophomore Morgan Beikirch (Livonia, N.Y. / Syracuse Stars). Beikirch capped off her goal with an assist en route to her fifth multi-point game of the year.

Junior Maria Olausson (Copenhagen, Denmark / Danish National Team) increased her team leading assist total to 18, adding two assists in the loss.

Despite holding an early 2-0 lead in the first, Robert Morris couldn't find a way to push aside a pesky Wayne State squad that kept on clawing back. The Colonials built up their lead off a Riley power-play goal midway through the first period at 8:59, while Walkland stretched it 2-0 when she scored less than six minutes later at 14:02.

Wayne State answered back though, scoring the games next two goals to tie the game up at 2-2. The Warriors added one 29 seconds after the second Colonial score and midway through the second stanza. Lindsay DiPietro and Sam Poyton were accredited with the scores.

Beikirch answered right back for the Colonials scoring her tenth goal of the year to bring the lead back to Robert Morris, but it proved not enough as the Warriors offense was waiting on the back burner ready to explode.

In the final half of the third period, WSU's Melissa Boal and Brandi Frankie took matters into their own hands, scoring three unanswered goals to put the Warriors over the top.

Sophomore Brianne McLaughlin (Sheffield Village, Oh. / Ohio Flames) made 29 saves on the afternoon.

Both teams were 1-3 on the extra-man opportunity in the game.

Robert Morris wraps up the their regular season as they return to the Michigan Coliseum for game two of the series tomorrow afternoon. Game time between the Warriors and Colonials is set for 3:30 p.m.
