Colonials Grab Twentieth Victory of Season at Central Conn. State, Saturday

New Britain, Conn. - The Robert Morris University women's basketball team defeated the Central Conn. State Blue Devils, 55-46, Saturday night at the Detrick Gym. With the victory the Colonials picked up their 20th victory of the season improving to 20-7 overall and to 14-3 in the Northeast Conference, while the Blue Devils fell to 6-22 overall and to 4-13 in the NEC. With the victory the Colonials have won 20-games in each of the last three seasons.

Denee Burgess scored the first points of the game, 12 seconds into the game, after a lay up. Burgess made another lay up 45 seconds later giving the Blue Devils a 4-0 lead. Kendra Williams (Bronx, N.Y. / Mount St. Ursula) scored the first points of the game for the Colonials at the 17:43 mark after making the first-of-two free throws. That free throw started a 8-0 run for the Colonials ending with a Jenna Burkett (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona Area) three-pointer and a Sugeiry Monsac (Villa Maria, Dom. Rep. / Arizona Western J.C.) lay up, making the score 8-4 at the 15:21 mark.

The Blue Devils took a one-point, 9-8 lead after a Gabriella Guegbelet lay up and free throw, at the 14:16 mark of the first half. Monsac answered back with a pair of free throws, starting a 9-0 run. The run was capped off with a Chinata Nesbit (Washington, D.C. / Chipola J.C.) lay up, giving the Colonials a 17-9 lead with 10:43 remaining in the first half.

The Colonial lead would hit eight points one more time in the first half after a Monsac free throw, but Central Conn. State would score the final five points of the half, cutting the Colonial lead to three, 26-23, at the half.

Psyche Butler (Fort Worth, Texas / New Mexico J.C.) opened the second half with a jumper giving the Colonials a 28-23 lead just 10 seconds into the half. RMU's lead hit six after a Nesbit jumper at the 15:50 mark, making the score 36-30.

Central Conn. State would take the lead after an Emily Rose three-pointer and would up its lead to three after a Guegbelet lay up with 5:15 remaining in the game. That lay up however would the Blue Devils last basket of the game as the Colonials would end the game on a 12-0 run, giving them a 55-46 victory.

Butler led the Colonials with 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Monsac and Nesbit also each scored 15 points. They both also grabbed nine rebounds each. Guegbelet led the Blue Devils with 20 points and 10 rebounds.

The Colonials close out the regular season at Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday, February 27. Tip-off is at 7:00 p.m.

Notes: For the game, RMU shot 33.3% (19-of-57) from the field, including 25% from beyond the three-point arc. They also made 62.5% (15-of-24) from the free throw line. CCSU shot 30.4% (17-of-56) from the field, including only 7.7% (1-of-13) from beyond the three-point arc. They also made 64.7% (11-of-17) from the free throw line.
