Philadelphia, Pa. - The Robert Morris University women's lacrosse team dropped their second contest to an Atlantic-10 foe this season as St. Joseph's University captured a 10-6 win over the Colonials in Philadelphia, Pa. this afternoon.
Freshman Ali Gibbons (Candia, NH / Machester) commanded the offense for Robert Morris, scoring two goals in the match.
Sophomore Jenn Collins (Edgewater, Md. / South River) and Junior Brittanny Smith (Owen Sound, Ontario / West Hill Secondary) notched two points a piece picking up a goal and an assist while Sophomores Jillian Howley (East Northport, N.Y. / Northport) and Ashley Levering (Glenwood, Md. / Glenelg) each scored a goal.
The Colonials (3-5) stood tall in their first ever meeting against the Hawks as both teams exchanged goals for the first 12:40 of the game. Howley and Collins registered the first RMU scores of the game at 24:49 and 17:20, tying the game up at 2-2.
St. Joseph's Ashley Brennan broke the tie with back-to-back goals at 15:32 and 4:53 to give the home team a 4-2 advantage. Brennan was one of four Hawks who finished the game with three points. Levering halted the run momentarily with her 12th goal of the season at 3:25 before St. Joseph's would pick up where they left off, scoring the final goal of the half to pin a 5-3 set back on the Colonials going into halftime.
RMU's Smith started off the scoring in the second half with her third goal of the season, bringing the Colonials within one at 29:00. This would be as close as they would get as St. Joseph's would take to the high road with a five-goal run, shutting out Robert Morris for a majority of the second stanza.
Ali Gibbons broke the scoreless drought with six minutes to play, tallying back-to-back scores and bringing the visitors within four as the game came to an end.
St. Joseph's out-shot Robert Morris, 26-21, while holding the advantage in ground balls and draw controls, 20-10, and 11-7.
Freshman Erica Webb (Arnold, Md. / Broadneck) turned away 12 shots in goal for the Colonials, tying her season-best mark set against Ohio State.
Robert Morris heads to Connecticut this Sunday, March 25, to take on the Sacred Heart Pioneers in their first Northeast Conference match-up of the season. Game time is scheduled for noon.
