Softball Splits with Quinnipiac

Hamden, Conn. - The Robert Morris University softball team stayed even in Northeast Conference action Saturday afternoon losing game one 6-2 while bouncing back in game two for a 3-1 victory. The Colonials are now 12-16 overall and 5-5 in conference play. Quinnipiac is now 11-20 and 5-5 in the NEC.

 

Quinnipiac scored four runs in the first inning, when senior pitcher Danielle Cohen (Marlton, N.J. / Cherokee) walked the bases loaded before giving a free pass to Christine Bourdeau allowing Maria Browne to score, giving the Bobcats a 1-0 lead. Cohen would strikeout Angela Casella before giving up a three-run double to Katie Allendorfer, making the score 4-0.

 

Quinnipiac scored two more runs in the third inning with a second Allendorfer double, scoring Cassella and Bourdeau, making the score 6-0 through three innings.

 

The Colonials picked up their only two runs of the game in the fifth inning with a Jill Spargo (Warren, Pa. / Warren Area) two-out single, scoring Camille Kline (Titusville, Pa. / Titusville) and Susan Perich (Center, Pa. / Center)

 

Quinnipiac held RMU scoreless over the next two innings taking game one 6-2. Cohen was handed the loss, pitching six innings, striking out seven batters. She also gave up six runs on eight hits. Krista Seeman recorded the victory for Quinnipiac pitching seven innings, while striking out 10 batters.

 

RMU opened the scoring in game two in the fourth inning. Brooke Panepinto (Belle Vernon, Pa. / Belle Vernon) doubled to left field, allowing Lauren Nisivoccia (Nutley, N.J. / Mount St. Dominic) to score. Panepinto advanced to third on a passes ball, then scored off a Jenna Pennesi (Allison Park, Pa. / Shaler) single.

 

With two on in the fifth, Panepinto reached first on an error, allowing Nisivoccia to score the Colonials third run of the game, giving RMU a 3-0 lead through four and a half innings.

 

RMU pitcher Brenna Reed (Carnegie, Pa. / Montour) held the Bobcats scoreless through six innings, but gave up one run in the seventh, when Kristin Sheriff drove in Sammi Allendorfer with a two-out single. Quinnipiac failed to score again giving RMU a 3-1 victory.

 

Reed tallied the victory, pitching seven innings, allowing only one run on three hits and struck out six batters.

 

The Colonials return to action Sunday, when they travel to Central Conn. State for a NEC double header. Game one is scheduled to start at Noon.
