Women's Soccer Drops 3-1 Decision To Alabama

Moon Township, Pa. / North Athletic Complex (Aug. 31, 2007)?Alabama scored just 11 seconds into Friday's women's soccer game at North Athletic Complex and never looked back as they upended Robert Morris University, 3-1, in the season opener for both teams.

On the opening kickoff, Alabama played a long ball down the middle of the field. Miscommunication between Colonials senior goaltender Jessica Onufer (Butler, Pa. / Butler) and a defender resulted in the boll rolling free in front of the net. Brooke Rogers ran on to the loose ball and easily found the empty net for the goal. The quick score tied for the eighth-fastest goal in NCAA history and the fourth fastest goal since 2003.

The game remained scoreless through the remainder of the first half. The Crimson Tide pushed the lead to 2-0 in the 66th minute. Jessica Deegan, who had two assists in the game, played a cross from the right corner of the field. Grace Lawson put a header on net that Onufer stopped with a diving save. The rebound, however, went out to Carly Mygrants who found the right corner open.

Just 60 seconds later, Deegan found another teammate for a 3-0 lead. This time her cross from the right corner found the head of Danielle Bernier who beat Onufer with a header.

Robert Morris sophomore Chelsea Miazgowicz (Crescent, Pa. / Moon) scored on a penalty kick in the 86th minute, shooting to the upper right of the net for her second penalty kick goal in two seasons. Sophomore Daneen Stevenato (North York, Ontario / Newtonbrook) drew the penalty as she beat her defender and was taken down from behind.

Onufer finished with six saves while Alabama's Justine Bernier stopped six shots for the win. The Crimson Tide held the edge in shots, 18-13. Each team attempted seven corner kicks.

The Colonials travel to the University of Pennsylvania Sunday, September 2, for a 1:00 p.m. game against the Quakers.
