Women's Golf Ties For Sixth At Youngstown State Invitational

Salem, Ohio / Salem Hills G.C. ? The Robert Morris University women's golf team tied for sixth at the nine-team Youngstown State Invitational, the opening tournament for the 2007-08 Colonials. Junior Melanie Ice (Beaver Falls, Pa. / Riverside) led RMU with a 19th place showing.

 

Youngstown State won the event by six strokes firing a team total 629 over the two-day tournament. Dayton, led by medalist Julie Pouliquen (77-76=153), took second with a  635. Detroit-Mercy (639) was third followed by Cleveland State (649), Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne (649), Robert Morris (674), Saint Francis (Pa.) (674) Gannon (680) and Mercyhurst (705).

 

Ice, playing in her first tournament as a Colonial, fired rounds of 81-82 for a 163 total at the 5,873-yard, par-72 course. She tied for sixth in the tournament in birdies with three and was one of the leaders in par-five scoring finishing two-over.

 

Sophomore Ashleigh Frieday (Grand Island, N.Y. / Grand Island) tied for 27th with senior teammate Heather Mulvaney (Greenwood, Ind. / Centre Grove) with 168 totals. Frieday shot 81-87 while Mulvaney went out in 83 after an opening round 85.

 

Junior Morgan Biekirch (Livonia, N.Y. / Livonia) recovered from an opening round 92 to shoot 84 and finish with a 176 total and a 42nd place finish. Junior Melissa Wenger (Middlebury, Ind. / Northridge) was 47th (91-88=179) followed by sophomore Lauren Lancia (Wexford, Pa. / North Allegheny) in 55th (94-94=188).

 

Sophomore Jacqueline Jurinko (McKeesport, Pa. / McKeesport) tied for 44th (91-87=178) while sophomore Sarah Davis (Wadsworth, Ohio / Wadsworth) tied for 51st (93-92=185).
