Women's Ice Hockey Drops 6-1 Decision To Wayne State

Box Score

Pittsburgh, Pa. - The Robert Morris University women's ice hockey team dropped a 6-1 decision to College Hockey America opponent Wayne State Friday night at the RMU Island Sports Center. The Colonials fought hard early on but a four-goal explosion in the second period proved to be too much as the Warriors extended their unbeaten streak to six games.

Junior Kristen Miles (London, Ontario / London Devillettes) tallied her fifth goal of the season while sophomore Jacki Gibson (Burlington, Ontario / Burlington Barracudas) and junior Megan Picinic (Cliffside Park, N.J. / Princeton Tigerlillies) picked up assists.

The Colonials (10-14-1, 0-3-0 CHA) fell behind early as the Warriors connected on a cross-crease pass in just the opening minutes of the first period. Melissa Boal, who scored three goals and two assists in the game, tallied her first goal of the game at the 18:15 mark to give Wayne State a 1-0 lead.

Robert Morris battled back though with a power-play score later in the period. Miles notched her second goal in as many games when she crashed the net at 8:00.

Despite leading the shot total, 12-11, after the first intermission, Robert Morris was caught up in the second period with Wayne State scoring four times on just 16 shots. Two goals by Boal and a score by Lindsay DiPietro and Sammie Bowers gave the Warriors a 5-1 advantage.

The Warriors closed the game out 47 seconds into the third period with their sixth goal.

Junior Brianne McLaughlin (Sheffield Village, Oh. / Ohio Flames) played the first two periods with 21 saves made while freshman Daneca Butterfield (Kronau, Saskatchewan / Notre Dame Hounds) wrapped up the third with seven saves.

The Colonials were out-shot, 34-25. Both teams' power-play units converted one time with RMU going 1-for-3 and WSU converting 1-for-5.

Robert Morris meets up with Wayne State again on Saturday, Jan. 26 for a 7:35 p.m. face-off.
