The Robert Morris University women's ice hockey team was dealt its sixth consecutive loss Saturday night as Wayne State defeated the Colonials, 6-4, in College Hockey America action at the RMU Island Sports Center. Robert Morris falls to 10-15-1 overall and 0-4-0 in conference play while Wayne State moves to 14-6-2 and 2-0-0 in CHA play.
Junior Morgan Beikirch (Livonia, N.Y. / Buffalo Bison) led the attack for Robert Morris scoring a goal and two assists. Freshman Sara O'Malley (Guelph, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) picked up a goal and an assist while freshman Maria Stoa (Bloomington, Minn. / Eden Prairie) nabbed two helpers.
Junior Kristen Miles (London, Ontario / London Devillettes) scored her sixth goal of the season as she moved to her goal-streak to three games.
In a penalty-laden game where the two teams combined for 58 penalty minutes, Wayne State weathered the storm scoring the game's first goal on a short-handed opportunity. Melissa Boal tacked in her first of three goals when she took a mishandled pass near the Warriors blue line the length of the ice for a one-on-one strike at 7:35.
The Colonials brushed off the early score with the next two goals. O'Malley converted the power-play chance taking a pass up the neutral zone and right to goal for her tenth score of the season at 8:15. Juniors Samantha Ullrich (St. Louis, Mo. / Team Illinois U-19) and Brianne McLaughlin (Sheffield Village, Oh. / Ohio Flames) were credited with the assists.
Robert Morris took the lead on another power-play chance near the end of the period. Sophomore Jessica Riley (Hamilton, Ontario / Stoney Creek Sabres) chipped in a pass on the door step for the 2-1 advantage at 18:25. Beikirch and junior Jenny Monteleone (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Ohio Flames) earned credit on the play.
The lead was short lived though as Wayne State turned up the heat with three straight goals. The Warriors tied the game less than a minute later with a goal by Katrina Protopapas. Scores by Lindsay DiPietro and Boal in the second period gave WSU a 4-2 edge.
Miles brought the Colonials back within one with another goal on the door step at the 12:00 mark but Boal stretched the advantage back to two when she tallied her third goal of the game just 22 seconds later.
Wayne State separated themselves for good in the third with DiPietro's second goal of the game midway through the period.
Beikirch got Robert Morris within two at16:59 but the Wayne State defense sealed the 6-4 victory killing the clock the rest of the way.
McLaughlin played 58:49 with 24 saves made and her first collegiate point, while her counterpart Valery Turcotte finished the game with 30 saves.
The Colonials outshot the Warriors, 34-30. Robert Morris converted 2-of-10 power-play opportunities while Wayne State was 1-of-6.
Robert Morris returns to action when they host Niagara for a College Hockey America series on Friday, Feb. 8 and Saturday, Feb. 9 at the RMU Island Sports Center. Both games are scheduled for 7:35 p.m.
