Moon Township, Pa. / North Athletic Complex?A second half comeback by the Robert Morris University women's soccer team came up short in a 2-1 Northeast Conference loss to Long Island at North Athletic Complex Sunday afternoon. The Colonials watch their record fall to 6-10-0 and 2-5-0 in conference play while the Blackbirds improve to 7-0 in conference and 13-3-1 overall.
Ariana Calderon put Long Island on top in the 39th minute, scoring from the top of the 18-yard box. Her right footed shot traveled low and found the inside of the far post.
Calderon was in the right place at the right time again in the 54th minute. Caitlin Meadows shot from 25-yards out hit the crossbar and bounced back to the middle of box. Calderon was the first player there, knocking in the rebound for a 2-0 lead on her second marker of the contest.
The Colonials cut the margin in half when RMU senior forward Brenda Sasu (Gaithersburg, Md. / Quince Orchard) and LIU goalkeeper Christine DeLashmutt arrived at the same time for a cross from freshman Jess Sharik (North Huntington, Pa. / Norwin). The ball squirted free to sophomore Kathleen Caggiano (Moon Township, Pa. / Moon) at the top of the box where she knocked it into the empty net in the 79th minute.
Both teams finished with 10 shots, the Colonials putting nine of those on goal. DeLashmutt finished with six saves with teammate Amy Johnson accounting for one stop while playing the final 11 minutes. RMU senior goalkeeper Caitlin Dilal (Rochester, N.Y. / Our Lady of Mercy) had four saves.
The Colonials travel to Sacred Heart for a 4:00 p.m. tilt Friday, October 31.
