RMU Drops 2-1 Overtime Heartbreaker in Season Finale

Loretto, Pa. ? In the final regular season game of the 2008 season, the Robert Morris University field hockey team hoped to make history and be the first Colonial field hockey squad to make it to the NEC Tournament. Robert Morris fought hard to defeat Saint Francis (Pa.), but the Red Flash prevailed with a 2-1 win in overtime.

Saint Francis was able to get on the board early when Belen Albanes scored off a corner from about five yards out on an assist from Caitlyn Brown at the 6:14 mark.

Senior Sam Lawless (St. Louis, Mo. / Lafayette), in her final game as a Colonial, tied the game, 1-1, off a corner feed from Jessica Charles (Lancaster Pa. / Lampeter-Strasburg) 10 minutes later at 15:58.

For the remainder of regulation, Robert Morris played solid defense, holding the Red Flash to a total of two shots. Still tied at one, the Colonials and Red Flash needed an extra period to determine the outcome.

Just 3:36 into overtime, Robert Morris goalkeeper Stephanie Seeley (Louisville, Ky. / Ballard) came out of the cage to play a ball.  As she came forward, Albanes connected with Allison Severage to slip one behind Seeley and net the game winner.

Robert Morris concludes the season with an overall record of 5-13, including a mark of 2-5 in NEC play. The 2008 season marked the first five-win season in Colonial field hockey history. Also for the first time, two players earned NEC honors as Julie Gabriel (Kraainem, Belgium / Lycee Emil Jacqmain) and Hayley Botha (Johannesburg, South Africa / St. Mary's) each earned Rookie of the Week awards.
