Detroit, Mich. – The Robert Morris University women's ice hockey team garnished its biggest win in program history Friday night as the Colonials upset College Hockey America leader and #10-ranked Wayne State, 2-1, at the City Sports Arena in Detroit, Mich.
The victory marks the first win over a nationally-ranked opponent for the Colonials (12-16-1, 2-5-0 CHA) as well as their first win over Wayne State in 11 attempts. It also sets a new program-best for most wins in a season (12), surpassing the 11 wins during the 2006-07 season.
After taking a 0-0 tie into the first intermission, Wayne State (17-7-3, 5-1-1 CHA) came storming out of the gates with a goal just 34 seconds into the second period. Melissa Boal scored her 30th goal of the season off an assist from line-mate Sam Poyton to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.
The lead would be short-lived though as Robert Morris answered back with two goals in the span of 3:24. Sophomore Jessica Riley (Hamilton, Ontario / Stoney Creek Sabres) got the ball rolling with her third goal of the season, scoring on the rebound of a shot by junior Ali Proodian (Canton, Mich. / Honeybaked U-19) that rang off the post at the 5:10 mark. Sophomore Mallory Giambra (Rochester, N.Y. / Rochester Edge) got credit with the second assist.
RMU would take the lead after being awarded a power-play when WSU's Tegan Schroeder was called for hooking at 7:29 of the second period. Junior Megan Picinic (Cliffside Park, N.J. / Princeton Tigerlillies) capitalized on the penalty little over a minute later when she connected off a pass from Giambra for her sixth goal of the year at 8:34. Sophomore Jacki Gibson (Burlington, Ontario / Burlington Barracudas) netted her tenth assist on the play.
Robert Morris' defense sealed the victory in the third period with two penalty kills and 13 key saves from junior Brianne McLaughlin (Sheffield Village, Oh. / Ohio Flames), who finished the game with 26.
The Colonials outshot the Warriors, 29-27, while converting 1-of-4 chances on the power-play.
Robert Morris closes out the season series on Saturday, Feb. 16, when the teams take to the ice for a 2:00 p.m. face-off at the City Sports Arena.
