Box Score Detroit, Mich. ? The Robert Morris University women's ice hockey team split its second consecutive College Hockey America series Saturday afternoon as #10 Wayne State skated past the Colonials, 2-1, at the City Sports Arena in Detroit, Mich.
Despite the loss, the Colonials (12-17-1, 2-6-0 CHA) take sole possession of third place in the CHA standings thanks to their victory over the Warriors the night before along with a Mercyhurst sweep over Niagara this afternoon.
After capping off a milestone victory Friday night, the Colonials came out of the gates fired up with a goal midway through the first period. Junior Morgan Beikirch (Livonia, N.Y. / Buffalo Bison) beat senior net-minder Valery Turcotte with her fifth goal of the season at the 11:43 mark for a 1-0 advantage. Freshman Maria Stoa (Bloomington, Minn. / Eden Prairie) was credited with the assist.
The Warriors would battle back though with two goals in the second period. Junior Lindsay DiPietro knotted things up at 1-1 with a breakaway goal at 7:53, while less than a minute later, junior Sam Poyton recorded her 32nd goal of the season as she beat junior Brianne McLaughlin (Sheffield Village, Oh. / Ohio Flames) in the same fashion to give Wayne State the 2-1 lead.
Wayne State sealed the victory in the third period with a shut-out performance from Turcotte, who finished the game with 16 saves. McLaughlin stopped 21 shots for Robert Morris.
The Colonials were out-shot, 23-17, while going scoreless in eight chances on the power-play.
Robert Morris returns to action next weekend for a two-game series against Niagara on Friday, Feb. 22, and Saturday, Feb. 23. Game times are set for 7:00 p.m. both nights.
