Women's Ice Hockey Swept At Niagara

Colonials fail to connect on nine power-play chances

Niagara University, N.Y. – The Robert Morris University women's ice hockey was dealt its third straight loss Saturday night as College Hockey America foe Niagara defeated the Colonials, 4-1, at the Dwyer Arena.

The Colonials fall to 12-19-1 overall and 2-8-0 in CHA play, while the victory improves Niagara to 9-19-4 overall and 3-7-0 in the conference.

Sophomore Mallory Giambra (Rochester, N.Y. / Rochester Edge) led the offense with a goal, giving her four on the season.

After a slow start in game one, RMU opened up Saturday's action with a quick strike early in the first period. Giambra gave RMU a 1-0 lead when she beat Niagara's Jill Zelonis on an unassisted play at the 6:12 mark.  

Niagara would storm back though, starting with a power-play goal by Lisa Agozzino to tie the game at the end of the first period.

Ashley Riggs gave the Purple Eagles a 2-1 lead with a short-handed score at the 2:45 mark of the second period.

Two late third period goals would seal the game for Niagara. Mary McKinnon stretched the lead to 3-1 with a power-play score at 16:39, while Frances McPhail sealed the game at 4-1 with 1:37 left to play.

Junior Brianne McLaughlin (Sheffield Village, Ohio / Ohio Flames) stopped 22 shots in goal while Zelonis finished the game with 15 saves and her second straight win.

Robert Morris was outshot, 27-16, while going 0-for-9 on the power-play.

The Colonials wrap up the regular season on Friday, Feb. 29 and Saturday, Mar. 1, with a home-and-home series against Mercyhurst. Friday's game is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., at Mercyhurst.
