The Robert Morris University women's ice hockey team snapped a six-game losing streak Friday night with a 4-1 victory over CHA opponent Niagara at the RMU Island Sports Center. The Colonials victory ties the team for most wins in a season as they improve to 11-15-1 and 1-4-0 in league play.
Junior Kristen Miles (London, Ontario / London Devillettes) scored two goals to extend her team-leading point streak to four games.
Freshman Kylie Rossler (Regina, Saskatchewan / Regina Rebels) and sophomore Jacki Gibson (Burlington, Ontario / Burlington Barracudas) each had two assists.
Robert Morris opened the game up with an early 1-0 advantage. Senior Maria Olausson (Copenhagen, Denmark / Danish National Team) notched her second goal of the season when she tipped a shot over the glove hand of Niagara's Nikki Rudy just 5:16 into the first period. Juniors Alissa Dorman (Madison, Wisc. / Madison Capitals) and Jenny Monteleone (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Ohio Flames) got credit with the helpers.
The Colonials stretched the lead to 2-0 later in the period. Junior Ali Proodian (Canton, Mich. / Honeybaked U-19) took advantage of a misplayed puck in the neutral zone when she beat the Niagara defense on a break-away opportunity, scoring five-hole as she was dragged to the ice with 1:09 left in the frame.
Defense reigned supreme with just one goal scored off of 24 combined shots in the second period. Robert Morris smothered the Purple Eagles with great play from their penalty kill unit as well as 14 key saves from junior Brianne McLaughlin (Sheffield Village, Oh. / Ohio Flames), who finished the game with 29.
After killing off three NU power-plays in the period, RMU added some extra insurance to the lead. Kristen Miles scored her first of two goals when she collected her own rebound on the door step with 1:15 left to play. She would go onto seal the game with her second score of the night midway through the third with a backhand tip just inside the post at 11:19. Assists on the both goals were awarded to Rossler and Gibson.
Niagara closed out the game's scoring with a goal by Melanie Mills at the 12:07 mark.
Robert Morris was out-shot, 30-27. Both teams failed to score on six power-play chance each.
The Colonials close out the series Saturday, Feb. 9 at the RMU Island Sports Center. Face-off is scheduled for 7:35 p.m.
