Nesbit's Triple-Double Leads RMU Past St. Francis (N.Y.)

Brooklyn, N.Y. / Wellness Center? It took 31 years for a Robert Morris University women's basketball player to record a triple-double?senior forward Chinata Nesbit (Washington, D.C. / Chipola JC) has now done it twice in the team's last four games including Thursday's 77-62 win over St. Francis (N.Y.) in the quarterfinals of the 2008 Northeast Conference Tournament at Long Island University's Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center.

Nesbit recorded 18 points, pulled down a career-high 24 rebounds and dished out 10 assists to back-up her selection as a first team All-NEC player. The senior guard posted the program's first-ever double-double on February 25 when she scored 16 points, had 10 rebounds and finished with 12 assists in an 87-53 win over Mount St. Mary's. Nesbit went 5-of-21 from the floor Saturday night and 8-of-10 from the charity stripe.

Nesbit, along with junior guard Angela Pace (Westchester, N.Y. / Monroe JC), outrebounded the Terriers by themselves, 41-31. Pace finished with 17 boards, tying a career-high, while posting 18 points, also tying her career high. Junior guard Sade Logan (Knoxville, Tenn. / Chattanooga State JC) ? the 2008 NEC Player of the Year ? finished with a game-high 25 points going 10-26 from the field and 4-10 from three-point range. Junior guard Kendra Williams (Bronx, N.Y. / Mount St. Ursula) continued her hot shooting from long-range, going 3-of-4 from beyond the arc to score1 0 points.

The Colonials move on the NEC Tournament semifinals Sunday, March 9, where they will face the winner of Saturday's quarterfinal matchup pitching #3 Sacred Heart against #6 Monmouth. Tip-off for Sunday's game is slated for 4:30 p.m.

Trailing 7-6 after a Linda Warrington three-point play, the Colonials went on a 15-2 run sparked by 11 points from Logan to take a 23-9 lead with 9:59 left in the half. The Terriers clawed their way back in to the game when RMU's Kendra Williams was forced to the bench with three fouls.

St. Francis, behind two three-pointers by Tiffany Hill, cut the margin to 29-27 with 3:03 left. A pair of free throws by Pace, who scored the last 10 points of the half for Robert Morris, put the Colonials back-up four before Hill buried her third trifecta of the half. Pace and Hill traded layups in the final minute to send the game into break with the Colonials holding a 33-32 lead.

Hill had 15 of the Terriers 32 first half points while Pace had 12 and Logan 11 for the Colonials.

Logan came out firing in the second half, opening the period's scoring with a three-pointer from the left wing. After trading points on the next two possessions, the Colonials got buckets by Pace and Nesbit before Logan hit treys on back-to-back trips to give RMU a 47-39 lead with 14:52 left in the game.

Robert Morris followed a Terrier bucket with five straight points on a Nesbit jumper and free throw sandwiched around a layup by junior forward Grace Williams (Baxley, Ga. / Frank Phillips JC). The run gave RMU a 52-41 lead with 12:42 left in the half. St. Francis did not threaten the rest of the way, never cutting the Colonials margin to less than eight points for the remainder of the game.

The Colonials finished the game with a 53-31 advantage on the glass and, as a result, a 22-6 advantage in second-chance points. Robert Morris shot 38.9 percent from the field and 46.7 percent (7-15) from three-point range. Long Island hit 43.6 percent of their shots.
