Warriors Shutout Colonials, 5-0

Detroit, Mich.  ? Jan. 16, 2009 ? The Robert Morris University Colonials held the Wayne State Warriors scoreless in the first period, but the Warriors notched a four-goal surge in the third period to lead them to a 5-0 shutout win over the Colonials on Friday night at the City Sports Center. The win improves Wayne State to 14-3-2 overall and 5-0-0 in the CHA, while the Colonials drop to 9-12-2 overall and 4-2-1 in the CHA.

In the first period, Wayne State triggered off eight shots to Robert Morris's four, but both squads played intense defense to leave the score blank heading into the second period.

Wayne State got the 1-0 lead at 7:34 in the first period, when senior Melissa Boal hit the net off assists from senior Lindsey DiPietro and freshman Jill Szandzik. For the rest of the second period, the Colonials were able to hold off the Warrior attack.

Senior goalie Brianne McLaughlin (Sheffield Village, Ohio / Ohio Flames) posted an impressive 16 saves in the second period alone. With the Colonials only getting off two shots in the second, Wayne State netminder Lindsey Park only had to guard off a pair of attempts.

Within the first 10 minutes of the third period, the Warriors found themselves with four more goals, all of them occurring during five-on-five play. DiPietro was the first Warrior to slip the puck past McLaughlin, scoring at 1:14 in the third to earn her second point of the contest. Boal switched roles with DiPietro, as she assisted on the play, while junior Chelsea Burnett was also credited with an assist.

At 5:26, freshman Veronique Laramee-Paquette notched her eighth goal of the season when she grabbed a loose puck after a shot by Tina Vanderhoeven and tapped it in the net. Alyssa Baldin captured the second assist on the play.

Boal increased the Warrior lead to four with her 19th goal of the season and second of the night at 8:56. After grabbing the puck from Marlee Fisher, DiPietro found the Warriors leading scorer, Boal, across the ice to make the score.

Laramee-Paquette finalized the 5-0 win for the Warriors, tallying her second goal of the net off a pass from Baldwin.  

McLaughlin finished the night with 25 saves, while Park tallied seven. The Colonials were outshot 33 to eight, but were able to shutdown the Warriors in all five of their power-play opportunities.

The Colonials will face the Warriors tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. for the second game of the series in Detroit, Mich. at the City Sports Center.
