RMU Drops Game to No. 10 Boston University in Overtime, 4-3

Box Score Boston, Mass.  - October 9, 2009 - After a slow start the Robert Morris University Colonials recorded three goals in the third period of play against No. 10 Boston University to knot the score 3-3 and force overtime. However, the Terriers were able to score in overtime to take the win 4-3. The loss drops the Colonials to 1-2-0, while the Terriers improve to 1-0-2.

"It is always disappointing to lose a hockey game, but it rips your heart out in overtime, especially coming back the way we did," said head coach Nate Handrahan. "I love the amount of fight we are showing as a team, but our youth showed in the early parts of the game and we can't have any lags in effort or concentration. We will have to be prepared to play a 60 minute game tomorrow verse a rested team."

The game started off to a slow start as neither team could execute on a scoring opportunity. Finally, at 13:53 BU's Sarah Appleton got the first score on the board off an assist by Holly Lorms. The Terriers were able to increase their lead to two when Kasey Boucher scored her first goal of the night with less than two minutes left in the period.

Boucher entered the second period with a lot of energy and quickly capitalized on another scoring chance when she found a teammate's rebound and found the net to give the Terriers a 3-0 advantage at 3:29. The Terriers and the Colonials battled through the remainder of the second period, but neither team was able to connect leaving the score  3-0 heading into the final stanza.

The Colonials came to life in the third period, scoring three goals in less than six minutes with two of the goals being scored on the power play. Sophomore Brianna Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / NCCP Raiders) captured the Colonials first score on an extra-man advantage to set the score at 3-1. Senior Jacki Gibson (Burlington, Ontario / Burlington Barracudas) was credited with the assist and wasted little time getting the Colonials on the scoreboard for a second time. Two minutes later, during another power play Gibson scored on an unassisted play to make it a one goal game.  Captain Whitney Pappas (Evergreen, Co. / Belle Tire) tallied RMU's third goal at 10:45 off assists from freshman Cobina Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / Ottawa Senators) and junior Sara O'Malley (Guelph, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) to knot the score and force overtime, BU's third consecutive overtime this season.

Robert Morris put up a lot of fight in overtime, but at 3:35 RMU was called for checking, giving BU a power play advantage in overtime. The Terriers were able to execute on the opportunity when Lauren Cherewyk was able to get the puck past RMU goalie Daneca Butterfield (Kronau, Saskatchewan / Notre Dame Hounds) to take the 4-3 win.

Butterfield put up another strong performance with 30 saves, while BU goalie Melissa Haber recorded 24 saves. Boston University outshot the Colonials 34 to 27, but Robert Morris was successful on two-of-four extra man advantages, while the Terriers only went one-for-four.

Robert Morris will stay in Boston tomorrow and returns to the ice at 2:00 p.m. to take on the Northeastern.
