Box Score

Niagara, N.Y. - Nov. 15, 2009 - The Robert Morris University Colonials battled through 60 minutes of regulation and an overtime period against the Niagara Purple Eagles, but the game ended in a 2-2 deadlock. Niagara scored with 30 seconds left in the third period to take a 2-1 lead, but RMU's Kelsey Thomas (Hamilton, Ontario / Stoney Creek Sabres) scored with eight seconds remaining in the period to send the contest into overtime.

The tie brings the Colonials' record to 4-7-1 overall and 0-1-1 in CHA play, while Niagara moves to 5-4-3 overall and 2-1-1 in league play.

The Purple Eagles and the Colonials played relatively even in the first period, with Robert Morris firing off seven shots and Niagara putting off five shots. However, neither teams' defensive unit allowed a score, leaving the score set at 0-0 going into the second period.

Just like the night before, Niagara got the first score on the board at 1:52 in the second period. After Christina Jablonski fired a shot at the Colonial net, Frances McPhail picked up the rebound and sent the puck into the net to gain the early 1-0 lead.

Neither squad scored again in the remaining minutes of the second period to give Niagara a one goal cushion heading into the final period of regulation. Sophomore Brianna Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / NCCP Raiders) finally broke the silence at 9:52 in the third period when she got the biscuit past Niagara goalie Jenni Bauer's glove to knot the score 1-1. Sara O'Malley (Guelph, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) and Maria Stoa (Bloomington, Minn. / Eden Prairie) assisted on the play.

At 19:26, Niagara took advantage of a power-play opportunity when Caitlin Jenkings fired a back-handed shot into the Colonial net to take the 2-1 lead. However, Robert Morris played relentless in the remaining seconds of the game and after pulling junior goalie Daneca Butterfield (Kronau, Saskatchewan / Notre Dame Hounds) to gain the extra man advantage, Thomas found the net at 19:52 to tie the game and force overtime. O'Malley registered her second assist of the game on the play and Jamie Joslin (Richmond Hill, Ontario / Aurora Panthers) was credited with the second helper.

Neither team was able to find the net in five minutes of overtime action, leaving the game knotted, 2-2.

Butterfield tallied 22 saves in the defeat, while Bauer made 20 saves. Niagara was successful on one of five power play opportunities, while RMU was unable to score on seven extra man advantages.

The Colonials return to action on Friday, November 20 when they take on Syracuse in their CHA home opener at 7:05 p.m.
