Pittsburgh, Pa. ? Feb. 20, 2009 ? Despite firing off an even 33 shots against the Wayne State Warriors, the Robert Morris University Colonials fell, 4-2, to the Warriors on Friday night at the RMU Island Sports Center. The Colonials had the score knotted 1-1 after the first two periods, but three quick Wayne State goals early in the third period gave the Warriors the win. With the loss, the Colonials drop to 11-18-2 while the Warriors improve to 20-5-2.
The Colonials entered the game and immediately started firing shots at the Wayne State net. After having a goal taken away from RMU, they made up for it at 5:52 when freshman Kathryn Stack (Edmonton, Alberta / Edmonton Thunder) rifled a shot from just inside the blue line that made its way through the Warrior defense and past WSU's goalie Delayne Brian for the score. Senior captain Alissa Dorman (Madison, Wisc. / Madison Capitals) captured the assist on the play.
Wayne State outshot the Colonials 15 to 10 after the first period, but Robert Morris entered the second period with the one goal advantage.
At 12:44 in the second period, Wayne State's Lindsay DiPietro took a pass from Ciara Lee and sent the puck from deep inside the Warrior's zone to Sam Poyton who was alone at center ice. Poyton took off towards RMU's net and dangled the puck past RMU goalie Brianne McLaughlin (Sheffield Village, Ohio / Ohio Flames) when faced one-on-one.
The score was knotted 1-1 going into the third period, but Wayne State quickly took over the lead 4-1, scoring three goals within the first seven minutes of the period.  Katrina Protopapas scored her first goal of the season at 2:23 when she batted the rebound puck out of the air and into the net during a power-play. Veronique Laramee-Paquette was credited with the assist.
Two minutes later Sam Poyton found an opening in left side of RMU's net for her second goal of the night off assists from Melissa Boal and Chelsea Burnett. Â At 6:39 DiPietro scored Wayne State's fourth goal, also on an extra-man advantage, with Boal adding another helper to her collection. Natalie Payne was awarded the second assist.
The Colonials cut into the Warriors lead at 18:09 when senior Megan Picinic (Cliffside Park, N.J. / Princeton Tigerlilies) fired a shot into the net off assists from Kylie Rossler (Regina Saskatchewan / Regina Rebels) and Dorman.
One minute later the Colonials were very close to scoring again, triggering off six consecutive shots, but the Warrior blue line was able to hold them off to end the game with a 4-2 score.
The Colonials and the Warriors put off an even 33 shots, with Brian tallying 31 saves and McLaughlin adding 29. Wayne State capitalized on two-of-five penalties, while RMU was unsuccessful on five attempts.
Robert Morris returns to the RMU Island Sports Center tomorrow in their final home game of the season to take on Wayne State in game two of the series. Nine graduating seniors will be honored before the start of tomorrow night's contest.
