Colonials and Purple Eagles Battle to 3-3 Draw

Box Score

Niagara, N.Y. ? Feb. 28, 2009 ? For the second consecutive night the Robert Morris University Colonials and the Niagara Purple Eagles battled through overtime.  Neither team was able to score in the extra period leaving the score deadlocked 3-3 on Saturday night at Dwyer Arena in the 2008-09 regular-season finale for both teams.

In the first period both teams had relatively even opportunities to score with Robert Morris firing off eight shots and Niagara tallying nine attempts. However, neither squad was able to connect with the net leaving things scoreless heading into the second period.

At 1:05 in the second period freshman Paige Pietrangelo (Niagara Falls, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) netted her first goal of the season off assists from Kylie Rossler (Regina Saskatchewan / Regina Rebels) and Megan Picinic (Cliffside, N.J. / Princeton Tigerlillies). The score would give the Colonials the one goal cushion throughout the remainder of the second period, as no more scoring was made.

The Purple Eagles fired off an impressive 20 shots in the second period alone, but the Robert Morris defense played relentless to keep the lead.

39 seconds into the third period, Kristen Miles (London Ontario / London Devillettes) fired a shot past Niagara goalie Nikki Rudy to increase the Colonials lead to 2-0 on an unassisted play.

Less than five minutes later Picinic landed a goal to give the Colonials a solid 3-0 lead with sophomore Sara O'Malley (Guelph, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) dishing out the helper.

The Purple Eagles were able to slowly chip away at Robert Morris' lead throughout the final 12 minutes of regulation to tie things up and force overtime. At 8:46 Ashley Riggs lit the lamp off an assist from Autumn Stuntz, which started the string of goals.

At 10:26 Jocey Kleiber added another goal to Niagara's collection and then at 16:55 Riggs scored the game-tying goal for her second score of the night.

The Colonials and the Purple Eagles battled through five minutes of overtime, but neither team was able to score, ending the game with a 3-3 result.

Senior goalie Brianne McLaughlin (Sheffield Village, Ohio / Ohio Flames) finished the game with 40 saves, while Rudy tallied 23. The Colonials were one-of-five on the extra-man advantage, while the Purple Eagles were successful on one-of-eight opportunities.

The Colonials head to Erie this weekend to participate in the 2009 CHA Tournament as the No. 3 seed. Robert Morris will face No. 2 Wayne State on Friday, March 6 at 7:00 p.m. in the semifinals.
