Savannah, Ga. / Savannah Quarters Club?The Robert Morris University women's golf team opened the spring portion of its 2008-09 schedule by participating in the Lonnie Barton Memorial Invitational at the Savannah Quarters Club in Savannah, Ga. The Colonials took fifth at the six team event, posting a team score of 723 at the difficult layout designed by Greg Norman. The course played to a 6,020-yard, par 72 in the first round before shortening to 5,811 yards and a par of 71 for round two.
Towson took first at the event, putting four players in the top-15, and posting a team total of 676, six strokes ahead of second-place Siena. Long Island finished third (687) led by medalist Natalie Desjardins who posted 80-78 for a total of 158. Mount St. Mary's (722) was fourth followed by Robert Morris (723) and Monmouth (775).
Freshman Elizabeth Wenger (Toledo, Ohio / Whitmer) was the top finisher for Robert Morris, tying for 13th position. The rookie posted an opening round 90 followed by a second round 87 to post a two-day total of 177. Junior Ashleigh Frieday (Grand Island, N.Y. / Grand Island) and senior Melanie Ice (Beaver Falls, Pa. / Riverside) tied for 13th place with totals of 180. Frieday carded the team's low round of the event, an 86 in the final 18, after a first round 94. Ice, playing in her first event of her senior campaign, shot 93 and 87.
Freshman Cassie Stein (Lewiston, N.Y. / Nichols School) was 21st at 97-89=186 while junior Jacqueline Jurinko (McKeesport, Pa. / McKeesport) was 28th with 106-103=209. Playing as an individual, junior Sarah Davis (Wadsworth, Ohio / Wadsworth) scored a 95 and 105 for a 200 total and 25th place showing.
