Colonials Drop Match to Pitt, 3-0

University Park, Pa.  - Sept. 4, 2009 - The Robert Morris University Colonials fell to the University of Pittsburgh in three sets (25-11,25-9,25-21) on Friday in the first match of the Nittany Lion Invitational. The loss drops Robert Morris to an even 3-3 record, while Pitt improves to 4-2.

Pitt started out on a 2-0 run in the first set, but a kill from sophomore Hannah Veith (Columbus, Ohio / Worthington) and an attack error by Pitt knotted the score 2-2. However, Pitt quickly regained the lead and never relinquished it for the remainder of play.  A kill by Alexa Campbell ended the set 25-11. Despite the set one loss, the Colonials tallied four blocks, while the Panthers recorded zero.

In set two, the Panthers tallied 10 kills to RMU's five to lead them to a 24-9 victory. The two squads exchanged points until the Panthers went on a three point run to bring the score to 5-2.  The Colonials were able to bring the score within one after Pitt made an attacking error. However, the Panthers went on several more runs throughout the set to earn the decisive win.

The Colonials rebounded in the final set and started off with a 2-0 lead with a kill by Veith and an error by the Panthers. Pitt tied things up at 3-3, but then RMU went on a three point run with two kills from Veith and another Pitt error. The Colonials continued to lead until a kill from Pitt's Melissa Stadelman tied things up at 9-9. From that point Robert Morris and Pitt exchanged a few side-outs, but Pitt was able to take a two-point lead at 16-14 off an RMU hitting error. At 17-16 in the Panther's favor sophomore Alyssa Bennett (Ramona, Calif. / Ramona) tallied her first service ace of the game to tie things up 17-17. The Colonials tied things up again at 18-18 with a kill by junior Addie Jennings (Santa Barbara, Calif. / Dos Pueblos), but the Panthers were finally able to pull ahead and took set three 25-21 for the match win.

Veith led the Colonials with seven kills and two blocks, freshman Andrea Catucci (Davidsonville, Md. / Archbishop Spalding) led the team in digs with six and Bennett led the team in blocks with four.

Robert Morris returns to action tomorrow in day two of the Nittany Lion Invitational to take on two-time defending national champion Penn State at 10:00a.m. and Buffalo at 4:00p.m.
