Colonials Win Fourth Consecutive at Home

Box Score Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University volleyball team won its fourth consecutive match at home by using a dominating advantage in the blocking department to overcome in-state rival Saint Francis (Pa.), 25-18, 15-25, 25-20, 25-15, Wednesday evening in Northeast Conference (NEC) action inside the Charles L. Sewall Center.

The Colonials, ranked 20th nationally in blocks per game, outblocked the Red Flash 15-1, recording their largest blocking margin over an opponent since September 2003. Robert Morris still has only been outblocked once this season. With the victory, RMU improves to 5-2 in NEC play and remains in second place in the league standings.

Robert Morris used a balanced offensive attack in which five players recorded at least six kills. The Colonials received production from multiple sources on the defensive side as well with six players notching at least three blocks each.

Senior captain Amanda Graham (Melbourne, Fla. / Eau Gallie) posted eight kills on just 17 attempts to hit a match-high .412 for RMU while recording a match-high and season-high nine blocks, which tied her career high. Graham has tallied at least seven blocks in four of her last five matches, totaling 35 in her last 19 games played. Junior Hannah Veith (Columbus Ohio / Worthington), the NEC's leader in attack percentage and blocks per game, hit .353 while not making a single attack error and also added six blocks. Veith has made zero errors in four of her last seven matches, has hit at least .350 in 10 of her last 11 matches and has blocked at least four balls in each of her last seven matches.

Senior captain Charla Drabant (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton North) and sophomore Lindsey Monger (Rising Sun, Md. / Rising Sun) tied for the team lead with nine kills apiece. Drabant added a career-high five blocks while Monger collected her fifth consecutive match with double-digit digs by totaling a team-high 12 for the night and also matched her season high with three blocks.

Robert Morris jumped out of the gates early, taking 12 of the first 16 points in the opening game. Saint Francis responded in kind and achieved the identical feat, knotting the game at 16. With RMU tied for the first time all game, the Colonials collected themselves and used a kill and block from both Graham and Drabant to run off five straight points. RMU led by at least four the rest of the way and held on for the seven-point victory in a game in which it never trailed as Veith and Monger teamed up on the game-clinching block.

The Red Flash turned the tables in game two, using an 8-1 run after the teams split the opening four points to claim a seven-point edge. RMU tried to chip away at the margin, but could get no closer than five the rest of the way before Saint Francis extended its lead near the conclusion of game two to knot the match, 1-1.

Neither team opened up a large lead early in the third game as the squads split the first 10 points. The Colonials took eight of the next 12 to take a four-point lead. The RMU lead remained consistent as the Colonials led by at least three but no more than six points the rest of the way. A Veith kill gave the Colonials a 2-1 lead in games.

The first 27 points of game four were split as evenly as possible as RMU held a 14-13 edge with neither squad leading by more than three in the opening stages. The Colonials then went on a tear, closing the match in impressive fashion, as they took 11 of the final 13 points to run away from Saint Francis.

With the victory, the Colonials won their 20th consecutive regular-season match against the Red Flash and improved to 44-9 all-time against Saint Francis. Robert Morris has won four straight home matches for the first time since it won its first four at home to start the 2008 season.

With her eight block assists on the evening, Graham moves into a tie for fifth place on the school's all-time single-season list with 77. She is just seven shy of tying the top mark, which she already holds after reaching 84 in each of the past two seasons.

Robert Morris will have the upcoming weekend off, its first of the season, before playing a nonconference match at Pittsburgh next Tuesday, Oct. 19. The Colonials will then resume NEC play with a pair of home matches next Saturday, Oct. 23, and Sunday, Oct. 24.
