Moon Township, Pa. - Freshman forward Thea Imbrogno (Etobicoke, Ontario / Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) of the Robert Morris University women's hockey team was named the College Hockey America (CHA) Rookie of the Week in the CHA's first weekly release of the season.
It marked the fifth time the CHA has honored a Colonial with rookie of the week honors since the beginning of the 2008-09 season.
Imbrogno provided a huge spark in her collegiate debut, playing a role in the team's first three goals of the season, as she helped Robert Morris start its season with a big victory over No. 10 Providence.
The Friars jumped on the board first in the season opener, but Imbrogno provided an assist for sophomore forward Dayna Newsom (Oakville, Ontario / Oakville Ice) that evened the scoring just 37 seconds later. Providence would again take the lead, 2-1, but Imgrono helped set up a teammate again as she fed senior Maria Stoa (Bloomington, Minn. / Eden Prairie) cutting across the left circle, and Stoa knotted the game, 2-2.
The Colonials and Friars appeared to be headed to the second intermission still deadlocked, but Imbrogno had other ideas. This time she provided the finishing product herself as she used her speed to break free down the right side and beat the goalie as she cut back across the mouth of the goal to give RMU a lead which it would not relinquish. Robert Morris held on to defeat Providence, 5-4, in its season opener.
Imbrogno became the first Colonial in the history of the program to play a role in each of the team's first three goals in a season.
Imbrogno added an assist in the second game of the Colonials' series with the Friars, giving her four points in her first two games. She is only the third Colonial, and the first freshman ever, to record four points in the first two games of a season as teammate Brianna Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / NCCP Raiders) also accomplished the feat this season.
Imbrogno and her teammates will look for their second win over a nationally-ranked team in as many weeks when No. 10 Ohio State visits RMU this weekend for a two-game series. It is the first time ever that the Buckeyes have traveled to Pittsburgh to face the Colonials.
