Box Score Pittsburgh, Pa. - Freshman Thea Imbrogno (Etobicoke, Ontario / Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) collected an insurance goal and a game-opening assist to lead the Robert Morris University women's hockey team to a 3-1 victory over visiting Wayne State in its College Hockey America (CHA) home opener Friday afternoon at the RMU Island Sports Center.
It was the second consecutive multi-point game for Imbrogno and the third of her rookie campaign thus far. She is now tied for second on the squad with 10 points.
Sophomore Dayna Newsom (Oakville, Ontario / Oakville Ice) added an assist on Imbrogno's goal to record a point for her sixth consecutive game. She now owns the second-longest point streak in school history and has a team-leading 11 points, just one shy of her point total from her freshman season with 22 regular-season games remaining.
Neither one of the teams was able to create a multitude of scoring chances in the opening frame. In fact, when Wayne State earned the game's first power play at the 13:47 mark of the first period, the Colonials not only killed it off but held the Warriors without a shot on net for the entire two minutes.
When Wayne State earned another extra-man opportunity fewer than three minutes later, the RMU penalty kill unit was again up to the task. Robert Morris once again killed off the penalty, which carried over 29 seconds into the second period, without allowing a single shot to reach netminder Kristen DiCiocco (Niagara Falls, Ontario / Stoney Creek Jr. Sabres).
After killing off a pair of power plays, the Colonials earned one of their own at the 1:27 mark of the middle period. After Newsom won a faceoff in the offensive end, Imbrogno fed a pass to sophomore Kelsey Thomas (Hamilton, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) along the blue line near the middle of the ice. Thomas would up and deposited a slap shot past Warrior goalie Delayne Brian to break the scoreless tie. Junior Brianna Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / NCCP Raiders) tallied a second assist on the goal.
The Colonials dominated the second period statistically, outshooting Wayne State 17-4, and their pressure finally resulted in a second tally in the final minute of the frame. After a Warrior picked up a major penalty for checking from behind at the 17:13 mark, RMU took advantage of the long power play. Sophomore Jennifer Kindret (Winnipeg, Manitoba / BC Breakers) slotted the puck from the right circle to the far post, and the puck trickled across the goal line after a scrum in front of the net. Sophomore Jamie Joslin (Richmond Hill, Ontario / Aurora Panthers) was credited with an assist on RMU's second power-play goal of the period.
The Warriors finally got on the board in the early portion of the third as Lauren Ragen scored the game's third power-play goal to draw Wayne State within one.
With the Warriors now seeking the tie and RMU looking to add an insurance tally, the game featured plenty of opportunities as the squads combined for 31 shots in the final session. DiCiocco and the Colonial defense were put to the test and responded admirably--DiCiocco stopped 11 Warrior shots that could have tied the game in addition to three that RMU skaters blocked.
The best chance for Wayne State to tie it up came when DiCiocco got a piece of a Warrior shot, but the puck popped up into the air behind her and appeared destined to find the net. However, freshman Brandi Pollock (Virden, Manitoba / Westman Wildcats) came up huge for RMU by batting the puck out of midair and away from imminent danger to preserve the Colonial lead in the waning minutes.
Robert Morris was able to wrap it up when Wayne State pulled Brian in an attempt to gain the equalizer. After Newsom won a neutral-zone faceoff, Imbrogno received the puck and fired a shot from just inside the red line into the gaping net to give RMU the cushion it needed and setting the final margin.
Robert Morris outshot the Warriors 41-22, marking its best advantage in shooting margin in its last 21 games. Additionally, the Colonials broke the school record for shots in a conference contest and also had their best-ever advantage in the shot category in a league game.
DiCiocco saved 21 shots to earn her second victory of the season.
Robert Morris will look to sweep the series Saturday as the two teams will once again take the ice for an afternoon matchup. The first puck drop is set to drop at 3:05 p.m.
