Box Score Pittsburgh, Pa. - Feb. 27, 2010 - The Robert Morris University Colonials concluded the 2010 regular-season with a 4-1 loss to the Wayne State Warriors on Saturday evening at the RMU Island Sports Center. The Warriors scored a quick goal to start the game, which gave them the lead for the majority of the contest.
Freshman Kelsey Thomas (Hamilton, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) scored RMU's only goal towards the end of the first period to tie the game, but that deadlock was quickly thwarted with another goal by the Warriors a minute later. They held that lead for the remainder of the contest.
With the loss the Colonials drop to 10-23-1 overall and 3-12-1 in CHA play, while Wayne State improves to 9-17-4 overall and 5-10-1 in the league.
Wayne State's Katrina Protopapas started things off with a goal just nine seconds into the start of the game when she picked up a rebound shot made by Lauren Ragen and found the net for her 13th goal of the season. Alyssa Baldin was also credited with an assist.
Thomas tied the game 1-1 when Whitney Pappas (Evergreen, Co. / Belle Tire) sent the puck up the ice to Thomas who skated towards the Warrior net and flipped the puck into the top shelf for the score at the 17:33 mark.
However, The Colonials would hold that tie for a short time, as WSU's Julie Ingratta responded with a goal by sending the puck over junior goalie Daneca Butterfield's (Kronau, Saskatchewan / Notre Dame Hounds) left shoulder at 18:32.
After a scoreless second period, the Wayne State Warriors added to their lead with a goal by Buquet on the power play off assists from Julie Hebert and Ingratta.
In an attempt to cut into Wayne State's 3-1 lead the Colonials pulled their goalie, while also on the power play to gain the two man advantage, but Chelsea Burnett was able to find RMU's empty net to solidify the win, 4-1. Christine Jeffer was awarded with the assist on the play.
Butterfield finished the contest with 29 saves, while sophomore Brittany Zeches made 26 saves in her first collegiate start.
Wayne State went 1-for-5 on the power play, while the Colonials were held scoreless on six chances.
Robert Morris heads to Wayne State next week to compete in the CHA Tournament as the fifth seed. The Colonials will take on a familiar opponent in No. 4 Wayne State at 3:00 p.m.
