Moon Township, Pa. - Last week, a pair of Robert Morris University softball team members were named to the ESPN The Magazine District II Academic All-America Team. Junior Annie Dubovec (Chagrin Falls, Kenston) was selected to the District II First Team while sophomore Jaci Timko (Houston, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) picked up District II Second Team laurels.
Dubovec, a pitcher and designated player, boasts a 3.96 GPA as an applied mathematics major. The junior has earned one NEC Player of the Week award in 2010 and was named to the 2008 All-NEC Second Team. The third year hurler owns a 8-9 record on the rubber and leads the Colonials with her .358 batting average. She has tallied 49 hits, including eight doubles and five home runs.
While spending much of her time in right field this season, Timko has followed up with stellar numbers at the plate after last year's impressive freshman season. Second on the RMU squad with a .352 batting average, the outfielder leads the team with 51 hits and 37 runs. She has belted three homers, nine doubles and one triple while carrying a 3.65 GPA in applied psychology.
In order to be eligible for All-District Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00. The student-athlete must have reached sophomore eligibility and academic standing at the institution and must have completed at least one full academic year.
CoSIDA's District II covers Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. By being named to the ESPN The Magazine District II Academic All-America Team, Perich and Panepinto will have their names placed on the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration.
After finishing the 2010 season with an overall regular season record of 28-18, the No. 4 seeded Colonials will take on the No. 1 Long Island Blackbirds on Friday, May 14 in Brooklyn, N.Y.
