RMU Takes Down UConn to Open 2011

Box Score

Storrs, Conn. - Junior Brianna Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / NCCP Raiders) scored the game's opening two goals, each assisted by her sister, sophomore Cobina Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / Ottawa Senators), to lead the Robert Morris University women's hockey team to a 3-1 victory at UConn in the Colonials' first contest of 2011 Saturday afternoon at the Freitas Ice Forum.

It marked the first time in their collegiate careers that Cobina assisted on a goal for Brianna, but the duo didn't wait long to duplicate the feat as the pair hooked up again in the same order fewer than eight minutes later.

With her two points, Brianna Delaney became just the second Colonial to surpass the 80-point plateau for her career, joining senior assistant captain Sara O'Malley (Guelph, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks), and just the third RMU player to score 40 career goals, which she accomplished with her second score of the afternoon. It was Delaney's team-leading sixth multi-point game of the season and the 21st such occasion in her career.

After joining the team over the semester break, freshman Meeri Räisänen (Tampere, Finland / Espoo Blues Finland) earned the win in goal in her Colonial debut as she stopped 18 Husky attempts for the game. In the process, Räisänen also became the first Finnish player to appear in a game in Robert Morris history.

Even though Robert Morris was taking the ice for the first time after a 27-day layoff and Connecticut played last weekend, RMU was able to jump on the scoreboard first. Just 49 seconds after the Colonials had killed off the game's first power play, Brianna Delaney found the back of the net at the 17:26 mark of the opening frame to give RMU a 1-0 edge heading into the first intermission.

The Colonials carried that boost of momentum into the second period as the Delaney duet teamed up again. Cobina Delaney and classmate Kelsey Thomas (Hamilton Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) combined to assist on Brianna Delaney's second score of the game just 5:08 into the second stanza. Robert Morris looked to keep the pressure on as the Colonials fired three more shots on goal in the ensuing minutes, but Connecticut goalie Alexandra Garcia managed to keep the Huskies within striking distance.

The Huskies were able to crack the scoring column and pull within one at the 11:42 mark of the middle period. Jennifer Chaisson won a faceoff for the Huskies and proceeded to make it a 2-1 game when she scored courtesy of Stephanie Raithby and Rebecca Hewett.

UConn soon gained a chance to tie the game as the Huskies were placed on the power play with just under four minutes remaining in the second. The RMU penalty-kill unit held firm as the Colonials blocked three Husky shot attempts in killing off the man advantage, and the teams skated into their locker rooms with Robert Morris once again ahead by a goal.

After Connecticut took a penalty just over a minute into the third period, Robert Morris' power-play took advantage. With just four seconds left before the teams would return to even strength, freshman Thea Imbrogno (Etobicoke, Ontario / Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) continued her strong rookie season by lighting the lamp at the 3:06 mark of the third. O'Malley and sophomore Dayna Newsom (Oakville, Ontario / Oakville Ice) provided the helpers to regain a two-goal cushion for RMU.

Imbrogno, the reigning College Hockey America (CHA) Player of the Month, has now scored in three consecutive contests. Newsom, who leads the team with 12 assists, has now assisted on five of Imbrogno's six scores this season.

UConn would have multiple chances to get back into the game as the Huskies were given four third-period power plays with which to work. Robert Morris was forced to go on the penalty kill at the 8:27 mark of the third, but the situation soon grew worse as a second Colonial was placed in the box, giving the Huskies a 5-on-3 advantage. Despite skating down two players for a time, RMU only allowed two shots, both of which Räisänen corralled, in killing off the two UConn power plays.

Connecticut went back on the power play at the 14:17 mark, but the Colonial penalty-kill corps not only held the Huskies scoreless, but did not even concede a shot attempt in maintaining the two-goal margin. The Huskies had one last-gasp attempt as they received a power play with 58 seconds remaining and proceeded to pull their goalie to essentially gain a two-man advantage. Robert Morris once again proved up to the task as they held Connecticut without a shot on goal in the final minute to pick up the victory.

The Colonials held UConn without a goal on six power-play chances overall, marking the first time RMU held an opponent with at least six opportunities scoreless on the power play in its last 45 games.

Brianna Delaney, who now leads the team in both points (18) and goals (8), recorded her third multi-goal game of the season and the eighth of her career, the most among all active Colonials. She also won 10 of the 15 faceoffs she took on the afternoon.

While it was the first occasion on which Brianna scored courtesy of her younger sister, the reverse has happened quite frequently as Brianna has assisted on all four of Cobina's goals this season.

In four of their last six games, the Colonials have held their opponent to just a lone goal.

After claiming its first-ever victory against UConn in three tries, Robert Morris will look to sweep the series from the Huskies Sunday afternoon in its final non-conference game of the season. The puck is slated to drop at 1:00 p.m. as the Colonials continue their program-record, eight-game road trip.
