Colonials Split Series with Huskies

Box Score

Storrs, Conn. - A day after leading from start to finish in taking down UConn, the Robert Morris University women's hockey team scored two goals in the final 10 minutes of regulation, but it wasn't enough to overcome an early deficit as the Colonials fell to the Huskies, 6-2, in their final non-conference game of the season Sunday afternoon at the Freitas Ice Forum.

Despite the defeat, junior Brianna Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / NCCP Raiders) continued her recent strong play to give RMU supporters something to remember as her third-period helper broke the all-time school record for career assists. Delaney's assist at the 11:01 mark, the 42nd of her career, moved her out of a tie with Morgan Beikirch and into sole possession of first place on the RMU career assist list.

Delaney's record-breaking tally was made even more noteworthy since her younger sister, sophomore Cobina Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / Ottawa Senators), scored the goal to place Brianna atop the record book. It was Cobina's fifth goal of the season, and Brianna, who has eight points in her last six games, has provided an assist on every one of her sister's goals this season. This feat came just a day after Cobina assisted on a pair of goals for Brianna for the first time in their collegiate careers.

Freshman Anneline Lauziere (St. Thomas, Ontario / London Jr. Devilettes) also had a memorable day for the Colonials as the defenseman collected her first-ever point by scoring her first collegiate goal in the game's final frame.

Robert Morris earned a chance to take the lead early on by drawing a power play at the 5:17 mark of the opening period. The Colonials put pressure on UConn over the two-minute man advantage by attempting six shots at the Husky goal, but Connecticut held off the RMU assault. Fewer than three minutes after returning to even strength, Connecticut took the lead when Brittany Murphy found the back of the net at the 9:48 mark.

Connecticut committed another penalty in the closing minutes of the first period, but RMU was unable to tie the score on the power play, and the Huskies took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

Robert Morris nearly equalized the game early in the second frame when freshman Thea Imbrogno's (Etobicoke, Ontario / Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) shot rang off the post. After RMU killed off a UConn penalty without even allowing a single Husky shot attempt, the Colonials earned a power play of their own.

Imbrogno fired two shots on net as RMU attempted five overall during the man advantage, but the Colonials were unable to break through. Connecticut proceeded to continue its pattern from the first period as the Huskies scored again not long after killing off a penalty when Jenna Welch gave UConn some insurance by sending the puck across the goal line.

Connecticut put the game out of reach by scoring four goals in a 5:55 span across the final two periods.

Robert Morris ensured it would not be shutout when the Delaney sisters teamed up along with sophomore Kelsey Thomas (Hamilton, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) with just under nine minutes remaining in regulation.

Just 54 seconds later, Lauziere lit the lamp for the first time for the Colonials courtesy of sophomore Dayna Newsom's (Oakville, Ontario / Oakville Ice) team-leading 13th assist of the season. Newsom now has her second point streak of at least four games this season.

In spite of the flurry of RMU scoring, the Colonials were able to get no closer in the closing minutes and suffered their first defeat of 2011.

Robert Morris held significant edges in some key statistical categories as RMU outshot UConn 28-16, including 12-4 in the third period. The Colonials also went 37-21 on faceoffs with Newsom posting an impressive 19-9 mark at the dot.

Brianna Delaney now leads the team with 19 points on the season.

Robert Morris will look to get back on track when it concludes its program-record, eight-game road trip next weekend as it faces College Hockey America (CHA) foe Syracuse Friday, Jan. 14, and Saturday, Jan. 15.
