Hawks Oust Colonials, 2-0

Moon Township, Pa. / North Athletic Complex - Monmouth University scored once in each half to hand the Robert Morris University women's soccer team a 2-0 loss Sunday afternoon at North Athletic Complex. The Colonials slip to 9-5-1 overall and 3-3 in Northeast Conference games while the Hawks improve to 9-5 and 5-1 in league contests.

After feeling each other out in the opening moments of the contest, Robert Morris senior Rachel Sebbens (Irwin, Pa. / Greensburg Central Catholic) had the first quality opportunity of the game, unleashing a right-footed blast from 25 yards out that forced Jocelyn McCoy to make a diving save going to her left in the 27th minute.

Just two minutes later, Monmouth nearly took the lead. A soft pass was threaded through the RMU defense by Courtney Snyder, giving a breakaway to Dana Costello. Coming in through the left side of the box, Costello's shot to the far post rolled just wide.

With five minute remaining in the opening half, a free kick from midfield by Stacy Kadell bounced behind the RMU defense into the goal box. Alexa Freguletti was the first to it, and after taking a touch to settle the bouncing ball, she put a shot inside the right post to give the Hawks the lead at halftime.

Six minutes into the second half, RMU nearly had the equalizer. With a nifty cutback move, Sebbens put the ball on her left foot and curled a shot from 16 yards toward the right post only to see McCoy lunge out and secure the ball.

Kadell set-up the second score of the game for the Hawks showing off her right foot again with a ball all the way across the field to the right side. Just outside the box, Jill Root settled the long ball before hitting a left-footed in-swinging shot that curled inside the far post in the 62nd minute.

Robert Morris outshot Monnmouth, 11-9, but McCoy kept the sheet clean with four saves.

The Colonials continue a four-game NEC homestand Friday, Oct. 21, when they host Fairleigh Dickinson in a 1:00 p.m. game.
