Moon Township, Pa. - One week after claiming rookie of the week honors, freshman forward Rebecca Vint (Caledon, Ontario / Brampton Junior Thunder) of the Robert Morris University women's hockey team earned a slightly more substantial award Monday as she was named the College Hockey America (CHA) Player of the Week as announced in a league release.
Vint becomes the second active Colonial, joining senior assistant captain Brianna Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / NCCP Raiders), to have won a league player of the week accolade. She earned it for her notable offensive contributions in a pair of RMU wins this past week as the Colonials moved to 5-1-0, the best six-game start in program history.
With Vint's award, a Colonial rookie has earned weekly league recognition in six of the last seven regular-season weeks in which Robert Morris has competed. Sophomore Thea Imbrogno (Etobicoke, Ontario / Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) won three of the last four Rookie of the Week honors to close the 2010-11 campaign before freshman Katie Fergus (Oakville, Ontario / Burlington Jr. Barracudas) and Vint took home hardware in each of the past two weeks.
Vint entered the week averaging 2.25 points per game, but she actually managed to exceed her blistering scoring pace in a pair of Colonial victories this past weekend. In a 5-1 victory over RPI Friday, she recorded four points on the strength of two goals, including her first game-winner, and two assists, becoming just the second Colonial ever to tally at least four points in a game away from home. Vint scored twice within the game's opening eight minutes, providing all the offense the Colonials would need, and added primary assists in both the second and third periods. Her performance Friday marked her third multi-goal effort in her first five collegiate games. The rookie was far from done for the weekend, though, as she helped RMU sweep the series by tallying a goal and an assist in a 4-2 victory Saturday. Vint recorded a goal in her sixth-consecutive game, the first time any Colonial has scored in any six consecutive contests in a single season, and also notched her fifth multi-point game in six outings this season.
Prior to this season, no Colonial had ever registered more than eight points or more than six goals in the team's first six games. Vint's scorching start, though, has shattered those marks and has her with 15 points, including nine goals, in the first half dozen games of her collegiate career. Though her most significant contributions have been in the offensive zone, Vint also ranks second on the team, and first among forwards, in blocked shots with 15.
With her sizzling start, Vint is among the scoring leaders not only in the CHA but also across the nation. She leads the league in both goals and points and ranks second in assists. Among players with at least two games played in 2011-12, Vint leads the nation in goals per game and is second nationally in points per game. Vint's performances have also played a large role in helping Robert Morris rank tied for fourth nationally in scoring margin thus far this season.
After downing RPI twice last weekend, RMU will continue its record-setting stretch of games away from home this weekend. The Colonials will continue this nine-game stint with two games at St. Cloud State. Robert Morris will meet the Huskies Friday, Oct. 28, at 8:07 p.m. ET before the squads play a rematch Saturday afternoon.
