Box Score MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. / Oct. 30, 2011 – The Robert Morris field hockey team closed out its 2011 season with a 4-1 loss at the
hands of Monmouth in a Northeast Conference contest that
could have potentially propelled the Colonials to their first NEC playoff berth
with a win.
The Colonials finish the season with a record of 8-12
overall and 2-5 in conference play. The
eight wins this season sets a new school record surpassing the previous record
of 5 wins in the 2008 season.
In what was an emotional day, the Colonial program honored
its senior class consisting of Chantele Crow (Dauhin, Pa. / Central Dauphin),
Julie Gabriel (Kraainem, Belgium / Lycee Emil Jacqmain), Ally McGuire
(Duncannon, Pa. / Susquenita), Anna Miller (Louisville, Ky. / Ballard), and Jennifer Tobar (Bradenton, Fla. / Lakewood Ranch). This year's class will enter the
Robert Morris record book as the most successful class in school history with 19 wins. In addition to their collective
success, members of the class also achieved individual milestones in their
careers at Robert Morris. As a forward,
Chantele Crow leaves the program holding the records for goals and assists, as
well as points. Crow tallied 16 goals
and 9 assists totaling 41 points over her four-year career as a Colonial. Belgium midfielder Julie Gabriel became the
first-ever Colonial to record a hat trick, doing so against Bellarmine (Oct. 12, 2010). Gabriel was also honored as the program's
first NEC Rookie of the Week (Sept. 2, 2008).
Once the game got underway, Monmouth (14-5, 6-1) scored the first goal
of the game as Alex Carroll finished off a give-and-go play. Just over a minute later, the Hawks would
strike again on what would end up being the game-winning goal. Patricia O'Dwyer scored her first of three
goals in today's game as she took a turning shot that found the back of the net. The Colonials would quickly respond for their
only goal of the match. Freshman
midfielder Taleah Scott (Crookwell, Australia / Crookwell) took a pass from
fellow freshman Mady Hershey (Lititz, Pa. / Warwick) in open space and
deposited a shot to the far post just past the outstretched leg of the Monmouth
goaltender.
Scott's fifth goal of the season gave her 21 points (5
goals, 11 assists) and tied her with freshman Jamie Hartley (Tamworth,
Australia / University of Newcastle) (8 goals, 5 assists) for the team
lead. The assist from Hershey was her
first point as a Colonial.
In the second half, the Hawks would add two more goals from
the stick of O'Dwyer who deflected both goals in front of the crease. Both goals came off of set corner pieces by
the Hawks. The Colonials were able to
register three shots on goal in the second half, but they were not able to
translate those shots into any goals.
Monmouth was led by goaltender Teresa Mathews who stopped 4 of the 5
Colonial attempts to pick up the win.
Freshman goaltender Erin McKenzie (Lismore, Australia / University
of Queensland Tech) established a career high in saves with 14 in today's
contest. McKenzie finishes with the most
wins in a single season with 7, eclipsing the previous record of 5 held by
current assistant coach Stephanie Seeley.
The Colonials amassed a total of 83 points (27 goals, 29
assists) in the 2011 season. Along with
Scott and Hartley's 21 points each, fellow freshman Michelle Lewthwaite
(Macarthur, Australia / Westfield Sports High) contributed 12 points (3 goals,
6 assists). Together the three Aussies
accounted for 65 percent of the Colonial scoring this season.
