Moon Township, Pa. - After breaking the record for the longest unbeaten streak in program history this past weekend, three members of the Robert Morris University women's hockey team combined to sweep the trio of weekly awards given out by College Hockey America (CHA) as announced in a league release.
Sophomore defenseman Kylie St. Louis (Windsor, Ontario / Southwest Wildcats) and junior forward Kelsey Thomas (Hamilton, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) were designated as CHA Co-Players of the Week for their outstanding offensive efforts while freshman goaltender Courtney Vinet (Camrose, Alberta / Edge School) earned both CHA Goaltender of the Week and CHA Rookie of the Week honors.
The trio earned the awards after Robert Morris swept a road series from Lindenwood by a combined score of 12-2 to move into fourth nationally in winning percentage.
It marked the first time since January 2010 that RMU had multiple weekly honorees and the first time since October 2008 that the Colonials received recognition for both the league's top offensive and top defensive performance.
St. Louis and Thomas become the third and fourth active Colonials to have received awards in the league's player of the week category, joining senior assistant captain Brianna Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / NCCP Raiders) and freshman Rebecca Vint (Caledon, Ontario / Brampton Junior Thunder).
With her Goaltender of the Week accolade, Vinet becomes the first RMU rookie goaltender to earn a non-rookie award in over five years. Since junior Kristen DiCiocco (Niagara Falls, Ontario / Stoney Creek Jr. Sabres) had previously earned a goalie of the week award, both netminders on the RMU roster have now claimed this honor from the CHA within the past year.
Vinet also becomes the third distinct Colonial rookie to receive acknowledgement from the CHA this season, joining Vint and Katie Fergus (Oakville, Ontario / Burlington Jr. Barracudas). A Robert Morris rookie has now earned weekly league recognition in seven of the last nine regular-season weeks in which RMU has competed and has also taken home three of the past four CHA Rookie of the Month honors.
St. Louis, who claimed her second-career CHA honor, had a huge offensive week from her spot in the Colonial defense to help Robert Morris break its program-record unbeaten streak with two more victories. The sophomore blue-liner had yet to record a multi-point game in her career prior to this past weekend, but she actually managed to accomplish the feat twice in fewer than 24 hours. In the series opener, she assisted on the game's opening goal, scored herself fewer than eight minutes later and then provided her first-career game-winning goal after Lindenwood had fought back to tie the score. She factored into each of the first two Colonial goals again Sunday to help Robert Morris lead from wire to wire in the victory. St. Louis finished the weekend with five points, including a team-high three goals, while firing 10 shots at the cage.
St. Louis, who has now topped her freshman-year point total, ranks second in the CHA in points among defensemen and checks in among the top 20 nationally in points per game by defensemen.
Thomas, who garnered her first-career CHA award with the announcement, had a fantastic offensive weekend, thanks in large part to a career performance Saturday evening in which she shattered her previous career high for points in a game. She registered a goal and four assists to become just the fourth Colonial in school history to tally a five-point game and the first ever to do so away from home. Thomas, who had never previously registered more than two points in a game, whistled past the 20-career assist mark with her effort and also became just the fifth RMU student-athlete to notch a four-assist game. Thomas completed the weekend with a third-period goal Sunday, tallying goals in back-to-back games for the first time in her career, to extend her point streak to a career-long six games.
With her two goals, Thomas moved into a tie for ninth all-time at RMU in career goals and is currently tied for 12th with 37 career points. She is presently among the top 10 in goals, assists and points in the CHA.
In just her second-career appearance between the pipes, Vinet earned her first-collegiate shutout as she stopped a team season-high-tying 31 shots to increase her save percentage to .959. Vinet moved to 2-0-0 with the win, becoming the first Colonial in school history to earn wins in each of her first two appearances in net. Her effort was made far more impressive by the fact the she was forced to face the Lindenwood power play on an amazing 11 occasions and held it scoreless on each occurrence. In doing so, Vinet helped RMU kill off the most opposition power plays in a game in school history without conceding a single extra-man goal.
Vinet's pair of awards also made her the first student-athlete in the CHA this season to grab more than one league honor in the same week.
After traveling to Missouri to begin its November slate, Robert Morris has the upcoming weekend off before it recommences action next Tuesday, Nov. 22. However, when the Colonials resume play next week, they will continue their program-record stretch of nine straight games away from home. RMU will meet Colgate next Tuesday in a single game at 7 p.m.
