Pittsburgh, Pa. – Behind a 47-point performance from Brooks Ostergard, the Robert Morris men's hockey game skated to a 3-3 overtime tie with Army on Saturday night to take three Atlantic Hockey Association points away from the weekend.
“That was a great game and a great weekend of hockey for us,” Colonials head coach Derek Schooley said. “I thought Brooks Ostergard played very well, and our guys had nothing to hang their heads about. Even playing a little shorthanded, we played hard all weekend, and we made up some ground in the league standings.”
Ostergard (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Bay State Breakers) moved to 2-4-1 on the year after making 47 saves in 65 minutes of action – a performance that ranks fifth in the Robert Morris single-game save record book.
After Danny Colvin put the Black Knights up 1-0 early in the first period with assists from Andy Starczewkski and Cody Ikkala, Robert Morris would catch a break when sophomore forward Colin South (Sewickley, Pa. / Bay State Breakers) caught Army goalie Rob Tadazak out of position on an RMU power play for his second goal of the year. Tadazak appeared to trip after coming out of the crease to play a loose puck, and South had a wide open net after being set up by senior forward James Lyle (Nepean, Ontario / Smith Falls Bears) and junior forward Adam Brace (Cobden, Ontario / Canisius), who returned to the lineup this weekend after missing three games with an injury.
Army would answer later in the period with a power-play goal of their own – snapping the Colonials' streak of four-straight games without allowing a power-play goal. Mac Lalor would make it 2-1 at 17:01 with his second of the year and second of the weekend with assists from Starczewski and Colvin. Lalor's score was just the third power-play goal allowed by the Colonials this year while the team improved to 49-for-52 on the year after a 3-for-4 performance on Saturday night.
Robert Morris (5-6-1 overall, 3-2-1 Atlantic Hockey) looked as though it would go into the first intermission down a goal, but freshman forward Scott Jacklin (Kimberely, British Columbia / Trail Smoke Eaters) would tally his third career goal with 15 seconds left in the period to tie the game at 2-2. Senior forward Nick Chiavetta (Harrisburgh, Pa. / New York Applecore) and freshman forward Cody Cartier (Sylvan Lake, Ontario / Canmore Eagles) would record an assist on the goal – setting up his fellow freshman off the draw to Tadazak's right.
After a scoreless second period, the two teams would trade goals in the third starting with Maurice Alvarez's score at 2:52 of the period to put Army (1-6-5, 1-4-3 Atlantic Hockey) up 3-2. Mark Dube set up the goal, but the lead would not last long. RMU senior forward Cody Crichton (Palgrave, Ontario / Brampton Capitals) tallied his second goal of the weekend at 3:40 with a breakaway goal to make it 3-3. Freshman forward Cody Wydo (Allen Park, Mich. / Motor City Metal Jackets) set up the play with a diving attempt to clear the defensive zone that found Crichton streaking towards the net. The Colonials senior deked Tadazak with a backhand fake before slipping the puck into the net for his third of the year. Wydo would finish the weekend with three points (one goal, two assists) – one of two Colonials to do so along with Jacklin (two goals, one assist). Sophomore defenseman Jimmy Geerin (Anchorage, Alaska / Burnaby Express) also was credited with an assist on the goal.
Neither team would convert another opportunity in regulation, and for the first time this season, Robert Morris would head to overtime. Despite the disadvantage of playing the Black Knights – who had played in five overtime contests entering the night – Robert Morris actually outshot Army 6-4 in the added session (Army would hold the overall advantage at 50-42) including five shots during the lone power-play opportunity in overtime. The game winner would not be found by either team, however, as the Black Knights were able to prevent RMU's first sweep of the season.
Robert Morris returns to action next week with a two-game series at Sacred Heart.
