Colonials Go Cold In Setback at Lehigh

Bethlehem, Pa. / Stabler Arena -The Robert Morris University women's basketball team saw its four-game win streak come to an end with a 68-54 loss at Lehigh Saturday afternoon. The Colonials went ice cold in the second half, shooting 19.5 percent over the final 20 minutes to suffer just their second loss of the season falling to 7-2. Lehigh evens its record at 6-6.

Sophomore Artemis Spanou (Rhodes, Greece / Nea Smyrni (Greek National Team)) went 8-of-18 from the field, grabbing eight of her 12 rebounds on the offensive end of the floor. She added 19 points to earn her second consecutive double-double and the fourth of season. Spanou also had five steals, setting a new career high.

Briannica Tye (Aurora, Ill. / West Aurora (Mineral Area)) was the only other RMU player in double-digits as she added 11 points. She was 5-of-20 from the floor and had five assists and four steals.

The teams battled back-and-forth over the early portion of the contest. A three-pointer by April Williams (Bronx, N.Y. / Murry Bergtraum (Monroe College)) splashed a three-pointer just over the minutes into the game to give the Colonials 16-12 lead. Lehigh responded with a 9-2 run, taking the lead on a fastbreak layup by Becky Guman. A short jumper on the next possession by Sarah Williams gave Lehigh a three-point lead, 21-18, with just over nine minutes to play.

A three-point play by Mary Durojaye (London, England / Barking Abbey (British National Team)) tied the game at 25 when the team traded baskets over the next four minutes and RMU assumed a one-point lead, 29-28, when Tye hit a long-jumper. Williams drilled four free throws and the Mountain Hawks closed the half on a 12-6 run to carry a 41-34 lead at the break.

Spanou cut the lead to four points rights off the second half whistle, but Kelly Peterson splashed back-to-back three-pointers to stretch the lead to a game-high 10 points for Lehigh. Both teams went cold over the next six minutes. The lead eventually ended up at nine points for the Mountain Hawks when Emily Gratch hit a free throw with 10:51 to play.

The Colonials scored seven unanswered points on a three-pointer by Williams and a pair of driving lay-ins by Tye that cut the margin to two points, 51-49, with 8:54 left. However, another long drought by the Colonials allowed Lehigh to stretch the lead to 16 points as they finished the game on a 17-5 run and the only two field goals for MRU over the final minutes belonged to Spanou.

Alexa Williams finished with 16 points for the Mountain Hawks despite hitting just two field goals. She went 12-14 from the charity stripe however and grabbed 11 rebounds to record a double-double. Emily Gratch tacked on 13 points and eight rebounds off the bench.

Robert Morris shot just 19.5 percent (8-41) in the second half and were at 28.0 percent (21-75) overall. The Colonials connected on 6-of-33 three balls and went 6-of-11 (54.5 percent) from the charity stripe. Contrast that to Lehigh who hit 27-of-32 (84.4 percent) of its free throws and shot just over 41 percent (19-46) for the game.

Lehigh is the first team to outrebound RMU this season holding a 48-38 advantage.
