Moon Township, Pa. - Junior Kristen DiCiocco (Niagara Falls, Ontario / Stoney Creek Jr. Sabres) and freshman Rebecca Vint (Caledon, Ontario / Brampton Junior Thunder) of the Robert Morris University women's hockey team both earned weekly honors from College Hockey America (CHA) as announced in a league release Monday.
DiCiocco was named the CHA Goaltender of the Week again while Vint captured another CHA Rookie of the Week award as both contributed to Robert Morris' unbeaten weekend against Syracuse.
It marks the second time in the past month in which RMU has had multiple CHA honorees in the same week although the Colonials accomplished the feat with three different student-athletes Nov. 14.
DiCiocco, who collected her third-career award overall, has now been named the conference's goalie of the week in back-to-back weeks in which RMU has competed. Additionally, with freshman Courtney Vinet (Camrose, Alberta / Edge School) winning the same honor in November, Colonial goaltenders have combined to secure this honor in each of the last three weeks in which Robert Morris has played.
DiCiocco's performance between the pipes was absolutely crucial to helping Robert Morris start strong in league play. She stopped 26 shots in a 2-1 victory Friday and tied RMU's single-season record for goaltender victories in the process. DiCiocco did not allow a single even-strength goal for the fifth time in her last 12 games and stopped four Orange shots in the final 75 seconds when Syracuse skated with an extra attacker.
The junior saved her best for Saturday when she made seven saves in a furious sequence during the final 30 seconds of overtime to help ensure that the Colonials earn a point. DiCiocco finished with a team season-high 35 saves, the second-best mark of her career, and her seventh effort of at least 30 saves at Robert Morris. She helped RMU hold Syracuse scoreless on seven power-play opportunities Saturday, including a 47-second 5-on-3 advantage in the final three minutes of regulation as well as a power play chance in the overtime session. She posted a 0.96 GAA and a .968 save percentage for the week.
DiCiocco currently is among the national leaders in multiple categories and some of her current marks would also surpass previous RMU single-season records. She sits fifth nationally in both GAA (1.59) and winning percentage (.769) and has the ninth-highest save percentage across the nation (.935). DiCiocco's efforts have been a large reason why Robert Morris is currently third nationally in scoring defense, trailing only No. 1 Wisconsin and No. 2 Minnesota, as the Colonials have conceded just 10 even-strength goals in 15 games.
Vint's league recognition is the fourth of her young career and the third such weekly honor. With Vint taking this accolade again, a Robert Morris rookie has now earned weekly league recognition in seven of the last 11 regular-season weeks in which RMU has competed.
Vint tallied Robert Morris' lone goal Saturday against Syracuse and registered her first-career game-tying goal in the process to help RMU to rally against the Orange. With the score, Vint moved into a tie for fourth in single-season goals at RMU (14) and into a tie for seventh in single-season points (18) with 15 regular-season games remaining. In addition to leading the team in goals, points and shots at the halfway mark, Vint sports a +10 plus/minus and is first among forwards with 23 blocked shots.
Like DiCiocco, Vint also appears on the national leaderboards, and the rookie is on pace to break various RMU records later this season. She is currently ninth overall in goals per game (0.93) and is tied for third in points per game among rookies (1.6). If her current rate stands, Vint would top RMU's current single-season records for points, goals and assists.
After opening conference play this past weekend, Robert Morris will now take an extended break before returning to the ice. The Colonials will next be in action Dec. 30-31 when they host nationally-ranked Bemidji State with the series opener being a part of the annual RMU Hockey Showcase at CONSOL Energy Center.
