Another Comeback Pushes Unbeaten Mark to Five

Box Score

Pittsburgh, Pa. - For the third consecutive game in which it trailed after two periods, the Robert Morris University women's hockey team came back to earn a point as the Colonials rallied to draw Syracuse, 2-2, on Senior Day in College Hockey America (CHA) action Saturday afternoon at the RMU Island Sports Center.

Though it was the final home game for the quartet of RMU seniors, freshman Thea Imbrogno (Etobicoke, Ontario / Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) tried to steal the show as she collected both Colonial goals, including her third game-tying score of the year, to extend her point streak to eight games, which ties Morgan Beikirch's RMU program record from the 2006-07 season. Imbrogno's first-career multi-goal game came due in large part to a fantastic offensive effort that saw her break the single-game school record for shots on goal with 11.

Senior assistant captain Sara O'Malley (Guelph, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) assisted on both of Imbrogno's goals to move into sole possession of second place on RMU's all-time assist list with 43, trailing only junior Brianna Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / NCCP Raiders). It was O'Malley's sixth multi-point game of the season and the 24th of her career.

Just over two minutes into the contest, Syracuse had an early chance to take the lead as RMU was placed on the penalty kill. The Colonials were up to the task, though, and killed off the man-advantage opportunity.

When it earned its own power play fewer than five minutes later, the Colonials made sure to take advantage. Imbrogno netted the opening score at the 7:58 mark with Delaney assisting along with O'Malley.

Despite being shorthanded again in the latter stages of the first, RMU outshot Syracuse 14-8 over the opening 20 minutes and took its one-goal lead into the first intermission.

Syracuse was able to get on the board twice in the first 12 minutes of the second stanza, but on each occasion it was the beneficiary of a 5-on-3 advantage. The Orange took the lead at the 11:55 mark on Holly Carrie-Mattimo's second score of the game.

Even though it fell behind, Robert Morris continued to battle as the Colonials proceeded to kill off two Syracuse power plays in the final seven minutes of the second, allowing only one shot on net combined on the pair of chances.

Imbrogno, the two-time reigning CHA Rookie of the Week, banged home a puck in front at the 2:58 mark of the third to tie a game in the final frame for the second time in two weeks. Sophomore Dayna Newsom (Oakville, Ontario / Oakville Ice) contributed an assist along with O'Malley.

With the teams deadlocked and the time winding down, overtime appeared imminent until the Orange received a power play with under two minutes to play, placing the Colonials in a precarious position. However, Robert Morris refused to concede even a shot on net let alone a tying goal during the two-minute advantage.

Robert Morris had a few high-quality scores chances during the overtime session, but the Orange were able to hang on for a tie.

With the tie, Robert Morris extended its current unbeaten streak to five games, which is a new program record.

Robert Morris has earned the fourth seed for the upcoming CHA Tournament and will face off against No. 5 seed Wayne State in the first round at Syracuse Thursday, March 3.

This was Imbrogno's sixth multi-point game of the season, with three of the six coming in her last six games. She also leads the team with 18 points in the team's 15 conference contests.

Delaney, Imbrogno and O'Malley's current point totals are now all tied for fourth in single-season school history at 26.

Robert Morris outshot the Orange 37-28 for the game and still has never been outshot by Syracuse at home. Freshman netminder Meeri Räisänen (Kangasala, Finland / Espoo Blues Finland) made 26 stops for RMU and has allowed just one even-strength goal in her last 188 minutes between the pipes.

A pre-game ceremony honored RMU's four seniors--captain Whitney Pappas (Evergreen, Colo. / Belle Tire), O'Malley, Daneca Butterfield (Kronau, Saskatchewan / Notre Dame Hounds) and Maria Stoa (Bloomington, Minn. / Eden Prairie)--as it was the final home game of the season for the Colonials.

Though its CHA seeding is finalized, Robert Morris will wrap up its regular season next Friday, Feb. 25, with its second visit of the season to nationally-ranked Mercyhurst. First puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m.
