Box Score Erie, Pa. - Freshman Thea Imbrogno (Etobicoke, Ontario / Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) extended her program-record point streak to nine games with yet another multi-point performance, but it wasn't enough for the Robert Morris University women's hockey team to extend its five-game unbeaten streak as No. 3/T3 Mercyhurst took home a 6-2 decision in College Hockey America (CHA) action Friday night at the Mercyhurst Ice Center in each team's regular-season finale.
Imbrogno's two assists marked her fourth multi-point performance in her last six games overall and gave her six points in just four games against the nationally-ranked Lakers this season.
Junior Brianna Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / NCCP Raiders) and senior assistant captain Sara O'Malley (Guelph, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) both scored for the Colonials.
Delaney's goal moved her out of a tie and into first place in all-time power-play goals scored at RMU with 16. Her 90th career point also moved her into a tie for second in all-time goals scored at Robert Morris with 43.
Mercyhurst took an early lead when Kelley Steadman scored at the 6:44 mark, but the Colonials displayed their resilience by scoring on the game's next shot as they responded with a tally just 48 seconds later.
O'Malley lit the lamp courtesy of Imbrogno and freshman Anneline Lauziere (St. Thomas, Ontario / London Jr. Devilettes) to even the game, 1-1. It was Lauziere's third assist in her past three games.
Bailey Bram proceeded to put the Lakers back on top at the 13:35 mark, closing the scoring in the opening frame.
After killing off Mercyhurst's first man-advantage of the game early in the second, Robert Morris soon earned its own pair of power plays.
RMU would fire nine consecutive shot attempts and forced Mercyhurst goalie Hillary Pattenden to make six saves in fewer than four minutes, but the Colonials were unable to find an equalizer.
After playing defense for a string of minutes, Mercyhurst was able to turn the tide and put home two goals in the final five minutes of the second to gain a three-goal lead.
The Colonials continued to fight, though, and showed strong signs of life when Delaney registered her record-breaking tally just 6:36 into the third. O'Malley and Imbrogno combined to provide the helpers on the extra-man tally.
Mercyhurst refused to let RMU get any closer as it added two insurance goals, the final one with a mere 40 seconds to play, to set the final margin.
O'Malley's multi-point performance was her second consecutive, the seventh of her season and the 25th of her career, the most all time at Robert Morris.
Imbrogno and O'Malley now share the team lead with 28 points, a mark that has them tied for fourth in single-season school history. O'Malley also joins Imbrogno in having six points against Mercyhurst this season.
With O'Malley's early goal, Robert Morris continued its impressive streak--the Colonials have not been shutout in their past 41 games even though they have played 12 of those contests against nationally-ranked teams. The stretch is the longest active mark in the CHA and is tied with No. 1 Wisconsin for the fourth-longest streak in the nation.
Senior captain Whitney Pappas (Evergreen, Colo. / Belle Tire), a finalist for the BNY Mellon Wealth Management Hockey Humanitarian Award, moved into third place in RMU school history in career games played (137) Friday.
With its regular season complete, Robert Morris will now look ahead to next week's CHA Tournament. The Colonials are seeded fourth and will draw fifth-seeded Wayne State, from whom RMU took the season series, in the first round Thursday, March 3. The single-elimination game will commence at 3:00 p.m. at tournament host Syracuse.
