LIU Downs RMU, 4-1, in NEC Tournament Quarterfinals

Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University women's tennis team concluded its 2010-11 campaign Friday afternoon by dropping a 4-1 decision to No. 3 seed Long Island in the quarterfinals of the 2011 Northeast Conference Tournament in West Windsor, N.J. 

The Colonials, who entered the tournament as the No. 6 seed, finishes its season with an overall record of 5-10 in dual matches.

The Blackbirds earned the win thanks to victories at the first, third, fifth and sixth flights in singles play, while RMU won two of the three matches in doubles action to claim its point.

In doubles play, freshman Carolina Mourao Teixeira (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil) teamed up with sophomore Carla Limon (Cordoba, Mexico) to post an 8-5 victory over Dara Lahens and Fatima Ouattara at No. 2.

Sophomores Samantha Alves (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil) and Isabella Novella (Santo Andre, Brazil) earned an 8-6 victory over Zelie Pfeiffer and Linn Sjogren at the No. 3 doubles flight to help Robert Morris claim a point.

In singles play, Alves fell to Ouattara at the No. 3 flight, 6-3 and 6-3, while Novella fell to Pfeiffer at No. 5, 6-1 and 6-2.

LIU sealed the win when Taysha Blessington posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory over sophomore Clarissa Chen (Winnipeg, Manitoba / Winnipeg Secondary) and Lahens earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over junior Ekaterina Rudneva (Leningrad, Russia) at No. 6. 

Mourao Teixeira led Robert Morris in 2010-11 with a solid campaign, posting a 10-6 record in singles action, including a 6-1 mark at the No. 2 flight. She also teamed with Limon to post a 6-4 mark in doubles play. In singles play, Limon was 8-8 overall in 2010-11, including 6-3 at the No. 4 flight.
