Daytona Beach, Fla. - After the opening round of the 2011 Northeast Conference Women's Golf Championship, the Robert Morris University women's golf squad sits in fourth place among the 11 teams contesting the title.
The first round of the 54-hole championship was held Thursday in clear conditions at the LPGA International Legends Course (par 72; 6,065 yards).
RMU tallied a team total of 331 Thursday, bettering the scores of seven of its conference foes.
Junior Elizabeth Wenger (Toledo, Ohio / Whitmer) led the RMU effort by placing just outside the top 10 in the first round with a seven-over 79, resulting in a tie for 11th. Sophomore Jenna Rinker (Slippery Rock, Pa. / Slippery Rock (Clarion)) was just a few shots behind Wenger as she tied for 15th with a 10-over-par 82.
Sophomore Tess Wolfe (Beaver Falls, Pa. / Blackhawk) and freshman Alee Everman (Dayton, Ohio / Centerville) were next in line for Robert Morris as each shot 85 on the day to finish in a tie for 23rd. Freshman Annie Bozich (Aliquippa, Pa. / Center) was RMU's final golfer to post a number on the day as she recorded a 92 to place in a tie for 41st.
Defending champion Fairliegh Dickinson leads the field after the first round with a total of 310 and is followed by Sacred Heart (317) and Saint Francis (Pa.) (324).
Each member's team score for the NEC Championship is calculated by adding the squad's four lowest scores from each day. Additionally, the top-10 individual finishers are named to the all-tournament team.
The Colonials will look to improve on their solid position over the remaining 36 holes of the tournament.
