Moore Earns Back-to-Back Player of the Year Honors

Moon Township, Pa. - Senior captain Trevor Moore (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia / Western Reserve Academy) of the Robert Morris University men's lacrosse team earned his second-consecutive Northeast Conference (NEC) Player of the Year honor and was one of five Colonials honored at the pre-tournament league banquet Thursday evening.

Joining Moore on the All-NEC First Team was junior midfielder Kiel Matisz (Stoney Creek, Ontario / Saltfleet) who, like Moore, claimed his second-straight first-team accolade in 2011.

Junior midfielder Kyle Buchanan (Nepean, Ontario / John McCrae) was named to the All-NEC Second Team in back-to-back years and was joined by sophomore defenseman Ben Lewis (Cazenovia, N.Y. / Cazenovia Central), a first-time selection for the Colonials.

Freshman long-stick midfielder Tyler Rankel (Downington, Pa. / Downington West) rounded out RMU's honors by being named to the All-NEC Rookie Team.

After setting a single-season school record with 60 points and earning United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) All-America honors in 2010, Moore may have even topped his record-breaking junior season in 2011, especially with his recent play. Entering the week, he led the nation in goals per game, averaging over a hat trick (3.43) per contest, and ranked fifth in the country in points per game (4.21). His .51 goals per game margin over the second-place student-athlete is greater than the distance between second place and eighth place in that category. Moore has already broken RMU's single-game and single-season school records for goals in 2011 as he tallied seven scores in an April 13 contest at Canisius and currently tops the season chart with 48 after surpassing the previous record mark April 23 at Bryant.

Moore is the program's all-time leader in goals (132), assists (61) and points (193), and his goal total ranked second nationally among all active players entering the week. He currently is riding a 44-game point streak, third-longest nationally, and has notched at least two points (and at least one goal) in 15 straight games. Moore has also recorded a hat trick in six consecutive contests, a stretch which includes each one of RMU's NEC games.

Matisz has frequently helped orchestrate the nation's highest-scoring offense as he has posted a team-high and career-best 19 assists thus far in 2011. The junior has scored 13 times for a total of 32 points and has also contributed a career-high 32 ground balls this season. Matisz finished the regular season on a high note as he registered four consecutive games with at least three points, including tallying nine over the past two games combined. He came up huge in a key 16-15 win at Bryant April 23 when he broke his career high in assists with four and also added a goal to record his third-career five-point game. Matisz sits fourth all-time at RMU in assists (47) and fifth in both goals (51) and points (98) as he has a realistic shot at surpassing the century mark in points during the NEC Tournament.

Buchanan scored 17 goals in his first two Robert Morris seasons combined, but has truly found a scoring touch in 2011 as he has already put home 19 goals. The junior has added 15 assists to post a career-best 34 points this season and also contributed 41 ground balls. Buchanan has twice earned recognition from the NEC in 2011--he earned an award April 25 after posting a career-high six points, including the game-winning goal, in RMU's thrilling victory over Bryant. The junior displayed remarkable poise in the clutch by factoring into the scoring on four of RMU's final five goals, each of which came during the game's final nine minutes. Buchanan also earned honors March 14 after he collected a five-point game and a four-point game in the same week, leading the Colonials to a pair of victories. He also carried a consecutive point streak past 35 games earlier this season and has tallied at least one point in 42 of his 44 games in a RMU uniform.

After playing a reserve role a season ago, Lewis has been a consistent force on the defensive end for RMU, starting in 12 games for the Colonials. He has a team-leading 20 caused turnovers, which ranks second in single-season school history as he is just three shy of the top mark. His per game average of 1.54 also ranks him 32nd nationally in caused turnovers. Lewis also leads all RMU defenseman in ground balls with 19 and has helped RMU rank among the top 20 schools nationally in ground balls per game. Lewis had a brilliant all-around game against RMU's postseason opponent as he tallied a career-high six ground balls and a collegiate-best five caused turnovers April 9 at Quinnipiac.

Rankel has shown he belongs as a rookie by earning playing in time in every contest this season despite a plethora of talented veterans around him. He broke onto the scene when he registered his first-career point in the season opener at No. 3 North Carolina in the fourth quarter of a tightly-contested affair. He has grabbed 16 ground balls and caused eight turnovers with his long stick and also added another assist in a March 9 victory over Jacksonville.

After scoring a Division I season-high 27 goals in its regular-season finale against Sacred Heart to clinch the first-ever postseason berth in school history, Robert Morris is set to play in the inaugural NEC Men's Lacrosse Tournament game Friday, May 6. The third-seeded Colonials will battle second-seeded Quinnipiac at host Mount St. Mary's. The opening faceoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
