Moon Township, Pa. / North Athletic Complex-The Robert Morris University women's soccer team suffered a 3-2 setback to Cleveland State University in its home opener at North Athletic Complex Wednesday afternoon. The loss is the first of the season for the Colonials who fall to 2-1. The Vikings exit the contest with an identical 2-1 record.
An entertaining and back-and-forth affair didn't take long to get started. RMU took the lead just over 11 minutes into the game. Senior Holly Sieradzki (Clifton, N.J. / Clifton) picked up a loose ball deep in the Cleveland State zone. The senior quickly took possession and lobbed a shot from 25 yards out. Caught off guard, Vikings goalie Abby Crotteau reacted late and watched as the shot bounced in to the left-side netting.
Just 1:58 later, the Vikings knotted the game at 1-1. A cross from the left corner by Valerie Stahl found Taylor Vidovic at the near post. Vidovic lifted her right foot and redirected the ball into goal.
The Colonials regained the lead when Senior Brianna Bell (Irwin, Pa. / Hempfield) played a long ball through the right side of the Cleveland State defense. Senior Ayana Davis (Mt. Laurel, N.J. / Holy Cross) beat Crotteau to the loose ball and one-timed a right-footed shot inside the left post to make it a 2-1 game in the 22nd minute.
The first half scoring wasn't quite over yet. The third Viking corner kick of the game resulted in a goal as Stahl was all alone at the far post. Her header was true and unchallenged off the accurate feed from Kelcey Fischer to end the first half assault in the 40th minute.
The Vikings kept pressure on RMU through the start of the second half as they played a possession game and the Colonials kept looking for a quick counter-strike. The bubble finally burst on the RMU defense when a quick juke to the left by Natalie Daniels put her past the last RMU defender and deep inside the left side of the penalty box. Instead of shooting from a tough angle, Daniels played the ball back to the middle of box where Samantha Salamon hit a one-touch shot to the right side netting in the 80th minute.
Senior Jessica Olin (New Port Richey, Fla. / River Ridge) finished the game with four saves while Crotteau stopped one shot for the Vikings. Cleveland State outshot RMU 11-6.
The Colonials return to the pitch Friday, August 26, when they host Niagara in a 1:00 p.m. match at North Athletic Complex.
