Box Score 2 Morgantown, W.Va. - The Robert Morris University volleyball team held Big East foe West Virginia to a .096 hitting percentage and outhit the Mountaineers in two of the four sets the teams contested, but it wasn't enough to earn a victory as the Colonials fell 27-25, 25-13, 21-25, 25-14, in the final match of the Mountaineer Invitational Sunday evening at the WVU Coliseum.
The Colonials had previously dropped their opening match Sunday against Towson as the Tigers were able to produce a win in three sets.
Senior captain Hannah Veith (Columbus, Ohio / Worthington) and junior opposite hitter Amanda Craig (Houston, Texas / St. Agnes Academy) both earned All-Tournament accolades for the Colonials as the duo led RMU in kills for the weekend with 22 and 21, respectively. Veith tallied nine blocks in the tournament while Craig added seven blocks and 19 digs for RMU. Both of the upperclassmen also surpassed milestones in Robert Morris' match against WVU as Veith edged past the 700-kill mark for her career while Craig moved beyond the 500-kill plateau.
Freshman libero Melissa Bograd (Lemont, Ill. / Lemont) had a strong defensive performance for RMU in the nightcap as she collected a team-high 25 digs. It marked the most digs by a Colonial in a match that did not last five sets since October of 2008. The rookie also committed just a single reception error in 51 attempts in both matches combined Sunday, resulting in a .980 reception mark. Her effort helped Robert Morris post an impressive 79 digs against the Mountaineers.
West Virginia looked as though it was going to run away with the first set as it took 16 of the first 24 points to open up an eight-point lead. RMU came storming back with a 15-5 run, aided by four kills and a block from Veith, to come to the verge, 23-21, of taking the first set. The Mountaineers refused to back down, though, and strung together three straight points, and although Robert Morris would save two set points, WVU finally was able to grab the tight opener, 27-25.
The Mountaineers used a 7-0 run near the middle of the second set to move an 11-7 lead into double digits, allowing the hosts to open up a two-set lead. However, Robert Morris would not give in as the Colonials came out of the intermission and battled their way onto the scoreboard.
RMU won six of the first seven points in the third set to prompt a Mountaineer timeout. After the break, West Virginia was able to regroup and surged ahead, 13-11, near the midway point of the set. The teams kept it close for the ensuing 14 points as the squads were tied at 14, 15, 16 and 18. With RMU and WVU even after 36 points, the Colonials went on a 6-1 run and proceeded to take the set courtesy of a kill by freshman outside hitter Erica Robb (Novi, Mich. / Novi). Robert Morris held WVU to a .020 hitting mark in the third set.
After dropping the third set, West Virginia struck early in the fourth by using a 9-0 run to take a commanding 11-2 lead. Although RMU was able to play competitively with the hosts for the remainder of the set, it was not enough to overcome the early deficit.
Robb and Craig tied for the team high with nine kills with the former adding eight digs and an ace and the latter contributing 11 digs, three blocks and three assists. Freshman Sydney Sizemore (Covington, Ky. / Holy Cross), who saw her first collegiate action Sunday, tallied eight kills, four digs and two blocks against WVU while her classmate, Hannah Hoffman (Parker, Colo. / Ponderosa), totaled 18 assists and fell a dig shy of a double-double.
In its opening match Sunday, RMU could not generate enough to stop a Towson squad that improved to 3-1 on the season. The Tigers used a key 6-0 run in the first set to break open a 10-9 game and were able to carry that edge into a lead in the match.
The second set was the tightest of the three as it featured eight ties, but a 4-0 Towson spurt that cracked a 13-13 deadlock proved to be the difference as the Tigers held on for a 25-20 victory.
Towson was able to take the match with a strong performance in the third set as it knocked down 14 kills to seal the win.
Veith and Craig tied for the team lead with seven kills against Towson while Hoffman registered a team-high 21 assists and junior defensive specialist Andrea Catucci (Davidsonville, Md. / Archbishop Spalding) led RMU with seven digs.
Robert Morris will look to rebound when it resumes play next weekend at the JMU Invitational. RMU will meet Coastal Carolina Friday, Sept. 2, at 5:00 p.m. before it plays a pair of matches Saturday against Lehigh and host James Madison.
