RMU, Buffalo Play Entertaining Contest to 1-1 Draw

Moon Township, Pa. / North Athletic Complex  - The Robert Morris University and University of Buffalo men's soccer teams kept a crowd of nearly 400 fans entertained for 110 minutes as they played a wildly entertaining and hard fought game that ended in a 1-1 tie at North Athletic Complex Wednesday afternoon. Both squads exit the contest with records of 1-0-1 in the early portion of the 2011 season.

The Bulls scored the game's first goal 15 minutes into the second stanza of play. Carrying the ball down the right sideline, Andy Tiedt cut back left inside the RMU box, forcing the defense to collapse on him. Tiedt reacted by playing a short cross 12 yards from net to Maksym Kowal. Kowal took one touch to his left before hitting a low shot that deflected through the Colonials defense into the left side of the net to make it a 1-0 game.

The lead would last 16 minutes before RMU tied the game. A ball deep into the Buffalo zone off the foot of freshman midfielder Devon Williams (Kingston, Jamaica / Jamaican National Team) gave the Colonials a two-on-none breakaway with sophomore Daniel Calabretta (Brampton, Ontario / St. Margeurite d'Youville) and sophomore Prince Samuels (Saint Catherine, Jamaica / Kingston College). With Buffalo keeper Jonathan Viscosi committing to the ball, Calabretta sent a short pass to his left where Samuels finished into the vacated net.

Both teams had their chances to score the gamewinner before the end of regulation, but Samuels was stuffed on a breakaway chance in the 83rd minute. The Bulls' Anthony Johnson could only watch as junior keeper Toba Bolaji (Vaughan, Ontario / Maple) made a one-handed save on his point-blank header in the 90th minute.

Bolaji kept Buffalo off the board in overtime as well, making three saves during extra time. He made back-to-back stops turning away a Patrick Ryan attempt before recovering to make a rob Nate Woods of a possible second goal in the game.

A scoreless first half was not without its chances for both teams. Buffalo got rolling right off the opening kick-off, getting the first real chance of the game 44 seconds into regulation. A header by Nate Woods was on goal but RMU junior defender Kyle Macaulay (Woodbridge, Ontario / Saint Michael's College) was on the spot, rising up to head the shot out of goal and erase an early chance for the Bulls.

In a back-and-forth game, the next two quality chances belonged to the host Colonials. Williams set Francis Bowman (Fawn Grove, Pa. / Kennard-Dale) in alone on goal with a soft ball over the top of the Buffalo defense, but Bowman's shot skidded right of the net in the 15th minute. Five minutes later, Luca Campos (Monaca, Pa. / Center) settled a short cross from Samuels and blasted a left-footed volley on goal. The shot, however, was right at Viscosi who made the save.

Buffalo nearly go on the board in the 38th minute when a wide open blast from 18 yards out by Vinny DiVirgilio beat Bolaji, but rang hard off the left post and out of danger.

Bolaji finished the game with eight saves, a number that was matched by his opponent Viscosi. The Colonials have lost just one game at home in their last 10, putting up a record of 8-1-1 during that span.

They next travel to South Florida for a 7:30 p.m. game against the Bulls Sunday, September 4. South Florida is ranked ninth in the most recent Soccer America Poll. They are in the top 20 of the three major national polls (19th in TopDrawerSoccer.com; 20th in National Soccer Coaches Association of America).
