Pittsburgh, Pa. - In its opening affair against outside competition, the Robert Morris University women's hockey team delivered a nearly flawless performance as the Colonials blasted Penn State, 12-0, in an exhibition contest Friday evening at the RMU Island Sports Center.
In future seasons, the squads will meet in important conference matchups, with Penn State joining College Hockey America (CHA) for the 2012-13 campaign, but that was not the case Friday.
RMU's victory was a true team effort as 16 of its 18 skaters recorded points with an amazing nine Colonials registering multi-point efforts. Sophomore Thea Imbrogno (Etobicoke, Ontario / Mississauga Jr. Chiefs), the reigning CHA Rookie of the Year, and a pair of freshmen, Katie Fergus (Oakville, Ontario / Burlington Jr. Barracudas) and Rebecca Vint (Caledon, Ontario / Brampton Junior Thunder), led the way for Robert Morris as each tallied a trio of points on the evening. Imbrogno notched two goals and an assist while the rookie duo each put one home and added two helpers. Fergus and Vint's goals were part of a larger theme as four of the six RMU freshmen skaters dressed lit the lamp for the Colonials.
Robert Morris commanded the play throughout nearly the entire game as it tallied at least three goals in every period. Fergus got RMU on the board at 3:57 of the opening frame, and it didn't take long for the hosts to add to their lead. Junior Jennifer Kindret's (Winnipeg, Manitoba / BC Breakers) persistence paid off as she was able to send one across the line on a wraparound attempt after battling for the puck for several moments on the doorstep.
Freshman local product Chelsea Burdzy (Imperial, Pa. / Pittsburgh Penguins Elite), junior defenseman Jamie Joslin (Richmond Hill, Ontario / Aurora Panthers) and Imbrogno all added to the RMU lead in the latter half of the first period, giving the Colonials a commanding 5-0 edge after 20 minutes of play.
Robert Morris scored at a fast and furious pace in the second stanza as it found the twine three times in a span of just 2:06. Junior Dayna Newsom (Oakville, Ontario / Oakville Ice), Joslin and freshman Katelyn Scott (Brighton, Mich. / Belle Tire) kept the scoreboard operator busy with their trio of quick-striking second-period scores.
Imbrogno scored just 1:16 into the third session to keep the momentum going and her teammates would follow her lead. Vint, senior assistant captain Brianna Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / NCCP Raiders) and senior captain Paige Pietrangelo (Niagara Falls, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) completed the scoring for Robert Morris to set the final margin.
In addition to the trio with three points, Brianna Delaney, Cobina Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / Ottawa Senators), Joslin, Courtney Langston (Warrensburgh, Mo. / Shattuck St. Mary's), Pietrangelo and Kylie St. Louis (Windsor, Ontario / Southwest Wildcats) all recorded multi-point games for Robert Morris.
Junior Kristen DiCiocco (Niagara Falls, Ontario / Stoney Creek Jr. Sabres) and freshman Courtney Vinet (Camrose, Alberta / Edge School) split the time between the pipes nearly evenly over the 60 minutes to combine on the shutout for RMU.
The Colonials had a dominating advantage in the shots department, claiming a 75-6 cushion, and also won 47 of the 70 faceoffs contested. Perhaps surprisingly, the two Colonials who registered the highest shot totals were both defensemen as St. Louis and Joslin finished with 11 and nine, respectively.
Robert Morris went 3-for-5 on the power play while holding Penn State to an 0-for-3 mark.
RMU will have fewer than 24 hours to enjoy the victory as it turns right back around for an exhibition matchup Saturday evening as it hosts Waterloo at 6:05 p.m.
Following the conclusion of Saturday's game, there will be a ceremony in the lobby of the RMU Island Sports Center honoring former Colonial goaltender and current volunteer assistant coach Brianne McLaughlin for her on-ice accomplishments in both the intercollegiate and international realms. Robert Morris President Dr. Gregory Dell'Omo, Robert Morris Athletic Director Dr. Craig Coleman and Robert Morris Associate Athletic Director Marty Galosi will all make remarks before a large banner that recognizes McLaughlin's numerous accomplishments is unfurled. The banner will permanently hang in the main lobby.
