Box Score Moon Township, Pa. - Junior outside hitter Lindsey Monger (Rising Sun, Md. / Rising Sun) collected a match-high 23 kills, the most by a Colonial since 2004, in just three sets as the Robert Morris University volleyball team swept in-state rival Saint Francis (Pa.), 25-22, 25-20, 25-14, to claim its fourth-consecutive victory Wednesday evening in Northeast Conference (NEC) action at the Charles L. Sewall Center.
Monger's total was the highest by a Colonial since Megan Bell tallied 25 against Connecticut in November of 2004, a span of over 200 matches. Bell accomplished her feat, though, in a four-set victory. Monger's 23 kills came on just 40 attempts as she hit a match-high .425, topping the .400 mark in back-to-back matches for the first time in her career. She also collected 10 digs to register her team-leading seventh double-double of the season and the 15th of her career.
Freshman outside hitter Erica Robb (Novi, Mich. / Novi) fell a kill shy of her second double-double in three matches as she collected nine kills and a match-high 13 digs to lead the Colonial defensive effort.
"We're getting there," head coach Dale Starr said. "I was pleased with the effort overall. The defensive effort was pretty good. Our blocking wasn't what it had been, but we almost dug 20 balls a game. Having three players in double-figure digs in a three-game match is pretty solid defense."
Freshman setter Hannah Hoffman (Parker, Colo. / Ponderosa) helped direct Monger, Robb and the rest of the Colonial hitters and also helped out defensively as she claimed her third double-double of the season on the strength of a match-high 34 assists and a career-best 11 digs.
RMU became the first NEC team to collect three wins this season as the Colonials won for the sixth time in their past seven matches overall. The Colonials put up strong numbers as a team, knocking down 44 kills and digging 53 balls in just three sets.
Robert Morris burst out of the gate to begin the match, winning seven of the first eight points, and continued to pour it on as it soon pushed its advantage to double digits at 16-6 with Monger providing five kills during that opening stretch. Saint Francis refused to concede, however, and began fighting back as the Red Flash used a 14-4 run to suddenly even the set at 20 apiece. The Colonials demonstrated great resolve as they refused to give in to the changing momentum. After Starr used a timeout, RMU won three consecutive points to retake control and held off the Red Flash for the victory in a set in which it never trailed.
The second game's beginning was nearly a mirror image of the first as the two squads split the opening 22 points down the middle. Then RMU found its groove as the Colonials used a 6-1 spurt to take a five-point edge. Monger was crucial during that key stretch as she contributed to the result of five of the six Colonial points during the run by tallying four kills and a block. Saint Francis was able to get no closer than three points the rest of the way as Robert Morris maintained that five-point advantage to the finish to claim a two-set lead.
RMU made sure Saint Francis dropped any hopes of harboring a comeback by blowing the third game wide open in its early stages. The Colonials jumped out to a 9-1 lead and took it to double digits at the 15-5 mark. Once earning the double-figure lead, Robert Morris led by at least nine points the rest of the way in closing out the Red Flash with ease.
With her effort, Monger claimed her third 20+ kill match of the season, and now has hit double figures in both kills and digs in 10 matches this season.
Freshman middle blocker Becky Jay (Parma, Ohio / Padua Franciscan) posted a match-high five blocks for the Colonials, including three of which were of the solo variety.
Senior captain Hannah Veith (Columbus, Ohio / Worthington) added seven kills and three blocks while freshman libero Melissa Bograd (Lemont, Ill. / Lemont) just missed being the fourth Colonial with double-figure digs as she tallied nine on the evening.
Robert Morris, which has won 18 of its past 21 NEC matches, improved to 46-9 all-time against the Red Flash and has now started 3-0 in conference play in four straight seasons.
Robert Morris continues its homestand this Saturday, Oct. 1, when it hosts Fairleigh Dickinson in a 1:00 p.m. start.
